A5 at 32 teams, who makes the cut ...?
Firstly is moving to 32 teams for the autonomous conferences a good idea and if so what teams will be retained and what teams don’t make the cut
Teams that don’t make the new A4 32 team league will probably have to join the g5 in some kind of way to make a 96 team “ school “ block or it’s own FBS league that just might have enough Tv value to make enough coin to survive in the long run

A5 conferences to cut teams

SEC...vandy, Arkansas, South Carolina
Big10...I don’t know, mybe 3 schools
AAC... seems like a bunch of schools here would get cut
Pac-12....also seems like a bunch of schools would get the boot
B-12.... this again would see most schools get the boot

The above list (and who is missing) shows why it would never be cut to 32.

Might as well put in Upper Iowa. Has just as much of a chance of happening.

Yep will never happen. If there is a separation it will be the current P5 + a mixed of G5s to make one more conference.
G5 Guaranteed a spot
Army
Navy
Air Force
BYU
Boise State
Cincinnati
Houston
Memphis

Good Chance:
UCF
USF
ECU
Temple
Tulane
Rice
Buffalo
Colorado State
San Diego State
UNLV
Hawaii
UAB

That's 85 teams 14 teams per conference (P6) + ACC and Notre Dame

Ok so this list looks like a powerful league
But the other list of left behinds looks pretty good to , good enough to form a 96 team league and sustain itself financially with playoff and national championships that could be better than the other FBS league giving enough time, say 4 or 5 years imo

I would put USM, La Tech, Ark State and ULL in that list as well (if you are including Temple, Rice and UAB)

I would put Fresno, New Mexico, Wyoming and Nevada ahead of all those right above

Stanford and Duke are the two that I just can’t foresee ever being left out of the top category if they want to be. Too many schools want to be associated with them. There’s absolutely no way schools like Mississippi get in over them.

Why would Syracuse or Pitt be a pick, but zero teams from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska?

West Virginia?

No way BYU would make the cut, especially leaving out Arizona schools. More likely to have two Arizona schools.

North Carolina just cut the size of their football stadium from 63K down to 50K. The school itself is now about 58% female. They aren't going to be making a football cut.

There is no way to have 32 team A4.

Most likely 14x4 or 16x4 configuration. And when it happens, the current NCAA basketball tournament will end.

Not addressed here is the mechanism by which such an A4 would be created. How do you suppose the 32 schools would be selected? Would there be a czar appointed to make the decisions about which schools on the bubble are invited or rejected? Would a smaller group of schools (like the SEC members) quietly go about recruiting others to break away with them, and just stop recruiting when they get to 32?

Would wealthy schools who derive a substantial part of that wealth from basketball be invited, even though they wouldn't be invited if based strictly on football prowess or market value?

Would those 32 teams form their own smaller all-sports conferences outside the NCAA? Because surely the schools they kick out of the current P5 aren't likely to allow them to remain in their current conference for Olympic sports.

No, a 32 team A4 isn't going to happen.

RE: A5 at 32 teams, who makes the cut ...?
While a 32 team A4 isn't going to happen, something short of that could. And it wouldn't require breaking up the NCAA.

The length of the ACC's GoR complicates matters, but only if some of their members are invited to join a new, football centric conference. If the ACC were to be left intact, I could see how (though it's still a longshot) a new 24 member national conference might be possible. The key here is that one or more media companies would have to do the inviting, and they would want to have the creme de la creme spanning coast to coast.

Here are the four 6 team divisions I come up with that meet those criteria.

************************************************************

Pacific Division: Stanford, Oregon, USC, Washington, UCLA and California.

Southwest Division: Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas

South Division: Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss and Tennessee

North Division: Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan St, Penn St, Michigan and Iowa

***********************************************************

This conference would eschew any post season championship tournament except for its own 8 team CCG. They would play a regular season conference schedule of 8 games with a 5-1-1-1 format. The 8 game schedule allows them all to continue rivalries with teams from other conferences, many, if not most, of which would have strong TV appeal. It also provides an opportunity for most of the 24 teams to reach bowl eligibility despite their brutal conference schedule.

The establishment of this new conference leaves a number of schools capable of earning recognition as Mythical National Champion despite not playing the top teams from the new conference in the post season. The ACC and remnants of the B1G and Big 12 absorb the four SEC teams not invited to the new conference. The PAC backfills with top western teams and the AAC remains intact. With Notre Dame, this group is a powerful second tier in its own right, looking like this:

***********************************************************

PAC: Washington St, Oregon St, Arizona, Arizona St, Utah, Colorado, Boise St, BYU, San Diego St and Fresno St

B1G: Nebraska, Minnesota, Nortwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Rutgers and Vanderbilt

Big 12: Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St, Kansas, Kansas St, Iowa St, West Virginia, TCU and Mississippi St

ACC Atlantic: Florida St, Miami, Clemson, South Carolina, Louisville, Kentucky, Pitt and Syracuse

ACC Coastal: Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Boston College

American: USF, UCF, Cincinnati, Temple, East Carolina, Houston, SMU, Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa and Navy

Independent: Notre Dame

************************************************************

The champions of each of these six conferences/divisions (the P6) plus two teams selected at large would conduct their own 8 team post season tournament. Given the strong possibility that the champion of the new 24 team conference would have two losses, it's quite possible that the winner of the P6 tournament would be able to overtake them in polls and/or other rankings like Sagarin, Massey, etc. to claim a national championship.

The only thing left is to come up with a name for the new conference. Any suggestions?
