Far off campus stadium
Has anyone succeeded with a distant stadium.
On campus is preferable but several schools have off campus.
U Conn plays forty miles from campus U Mass even further.
U Mass has an on campus smaller stadium.
Has U Conn ever played on campus and do they have that possibility for FCS foes.
U Mass has the better football situation if the on campus stadium reaches mid twenties in capacity.
U Conn the better overall and basketball situation.
They need to build a rivalry to build up their programs.

Has any program succeeded with a stadium so far from campus.

UCLA plays far away from Westwood and succeeds. UTSA is doing okay so far but the clock is ticking. Miami should just be thrilled their legacy has allowed them to build some level of die hard fans or else they'd be a bigger Tulsa in the American.

It's hit or miss but generally, you need to be in one of THOSE conferences to make it work.

UConn plays all the big basketball games in Hartford. All the alumni and students are from Hartford. 6 weekends a year for football its fine. All SEC schools used to play half their games in larger cities in their states ie Alabama in Birmingham, Ole Miss in Jackson, Arkansas in Little Rock.

Not being on campus has been one of the main reasons Uconn is where they are. It has cost them $100’s of millions. Rutgers is a joke but they got the call up. UConn has, at a min, a massive bball tradition and they are now running to the new BE, why?

It works if you play in a historic stadium that people enjoying visiting as much as the Rose Bowl. Otherwise, not so much.

Florida plays us in Jacksonville. We used to play Auburn in either Atlanta or Columbus. Texas plays Oklahoma in DFW. Arkansas likes playing Texas A&M over there too. I think Oregon State used to play some games in Portland. Of course, Army plays Navy in Philadelphia, NYC, or Baltimore, but Philly most of the time.

Not really, they've had some attendence struggles.

The other half of it is that LA is a car centric megalopolis and both USC and UCLA have fans all over the region.

U Conn used to have an on campus stadium but tore it down when they moved to FBS. To do so again would require a new stadium.

Ray Jay is across town from USF. This is part of the reason they are looking at an on-campus stadium.

RE: Far off campus stadium
U Mass could eventually have a perfect situation .
Right sized on campus stadium for most games.
NFL stadium that fans are used to going to for P5 or semi annual U Conn game.
I think its 5-1 or 3-3 or something like that for a rule for two stadiums.
They should challenge that and have four on campus and two annually in the NFL stadium.
Temple and USF could do the same once their on campus stadiums are built.

For Connecticut making it easier for students to get to and tailgate at games is probably their only move .

If you're good, it doesn't matter where you play.

SMU drew crowds of 65,000 in the Cotton Bowl and later Texas Stadium. Its on-campus stadium is a five minute walk from the dorms and their actual (not announced) attendance can range from 5,000-15,000.

UConn used to play on campus in a stadium that was basically one big bank of concrete bleachers from the 40s, that was torn down for the new basketball training facility. UConn pretty consistently sold out Rentschler last decade, but the combination of an extended run of bad football and the change in opponents has hollowed out the fan base. There's nowhere practical to play a real football game on campus, but if UConn did drop to FCS there's a brand-new 5.5k soccer stadium in Hartford they built to be expandable to 10k if necessary. That'd almost certainly be the FCS home if things went that way.

It used to be that there was a split of the big games between Hartford and Gampel, but as the number of big games on the schedule decreased it started turning into all the big games at XL just to try to keep XL afloat. Getting a better home slate so that you can start putting more big games in Gampel was part of the motivation for the Big East move.

RE: Far off campus stadium
I see no reason annual games would not consist of.
For U Conn
U Mass, BYU, NMSU with Army and Liberty as occasional opponents.
With off on series with B.C., Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple and Buffalo.

For U Mass
Same except trade BYU and Liberty from each group.

Independence plus less than desirable stadium situations could be a double wamy .
Both have good for G5 football programs all sports situations except football.
If I am running the show I push hard to make the other a rival.
Yes U Conn is superior in every way athletically .
They still need a rival and U Mass is about the only one available that plays football.
Syracuse is not going to play U Conn every year in football.
They should play every year in every sport.
The schools are close and even Gillete is not too far for either fan base.

Dream scenario get B.C. to join in and award some all sports type rivalry trophy between the three.

IMO, cross-town isn't really the issue for USF, for students in the dorms its just 6 times a year and not that bad of a commute, and many USF alumni are closer to RJ than to the USF campus anyway. Sure, for some students who are stuck on campus, you lose them with RJ, but I don't think that's very many fans in the stands.

The main thing is, if the stadium isn't on campus - or immediately adjacent to it like the Colosseum is to USC - you just can't create the same atmosphere on game day and via tailgating and partying in the days before the game. So the stadium could be nearby, maybe just 3-4 miles away and not crosstown, and it still wouldn't produce the same feel. And it's that feel that creates the magic that makes more people of all statuses want to come to the games.

Kinda of what Baylor had when they played at Floyd Casey compared to their current stadium.

South Carolina plays about 3 miles from campus. It used to negatively affect tailgating a bit because the area was more industrial, but it’s gotten a lot better

RE: Far off campus stadium
Anyone who plays at an NFL stadium. Pitt, San Diego State, USF.

From an outsider's perspective, Pitt's situation didn't seem to work very well. Their move off campus coincided with their disappearance from national relevance. Sad that a team with such great history can't even get 40,000 people to see them play a top-10 Oklahoma State team in 2017.

I'm most familiar with SDSU, having lived there for 3 years. The stadium is about 5 miles away. It works well for them. I mean, it's not a historical football power and half the students are commuters anyways. An on-campus stadium would work better, but probably not a whole lot better. The taxpayers recently voted to give the land that the NFL stadium is on to SDSU anyways, so now it's technically going to be an "on-campus" stadium, even though most of the "campus extension" there will be retail, a park, and faculty housing. They don't have the money to add a lot of academic space or increase enrollment because state funding has been flat and they've chased off a lot of their big donors who don't share the SDSU administration's public disdain for capitalism.

I have lived near Coastal about eight years.
Apartment complexes have sprung up like weeds in recent years.
At least ten within walking distance of the sports complex.
The dorms are also walking distance its an ideal set up.

UCLA has "attendance struggles" compared to their historical success and size of student body, but they are still top 25.
