Yet they cried that their offense could not hear each other.

I remember hearing the story (didn't sit near there) that on their first drive our DBs collided and their WR ran untouched 97 yards for a TD. One NSU fan stood up and was yelling, "All Day Baby. This, all day!" He left in the 3rd qtr after getting shut up pretty early on in 1st qtr. Not sure what was said to him, but I know I'd have been saying "Shortest Day I've ever seen!"

To this day I've never seen any team on any level get so many penalties called on their OL in my life!

Lol @ the fans who yell "All Day Baby!" after a great play or two.

I'm guilty of the hype too and believe I was yelling something like that down at UNC through the 3rd quarter until the wheels and entire tailgate completely fell off. So disappointing taking that walk of shame out of the stadium.

There is no way you were yelling that in the 3rd quarter @UNC :)

By that point I had already left and was drowning sorrows in the parking lot.

bahaha I was trash talking hard the first quarter by half time I had my shades on and hoodie covering my face and it was an overcast day so it looked silly. The tram ride back to the parking lot took forever full of UNC fans poking fun at ODU.

I was yelling stuff all the way through the first half, during the halftime and into the early third quarter. Feel totally entitled to judge whether that is through the third quarter or not.

Back in the day, I dated a Wake Forest Grad, they had a not-kind cheer for when they played UNC. When they came here, I chanted it. They quieted down in my area for a while after that. But then picked up when they started rolling again.

Anyway, here's an arbitrary prediction. I don't know anything about our team other than we have a lot of unknowns, and I don't know much about NSU. Do they have a QB with experience?

I think it will be ODU 35, NSU 20

I daresay we may even be down at halftime. You have my permission to save this post and make fun of me on Sept 1.

If we are down at halftime, and win by only 15, we will not win another game.

Recent history has shown that our first game is fairly predictive of our season in general; exposing weakness in the offense, defense, or both.

In 2016, we destroyed a Hampton team that was probably better than this 2019 NSU team. We went on to a bowl game that year.
Consider the lethargic 31-17 win vs Albany in 2017. That Albany team, while not great, was still likely very much better than the NSU team we will face this year. We went on to disappointingly under-achieve that year.
the Liberty game as did our entire 2018 season, speaks for itself.

Our schedules in 2017 and 2018, while demanding, were not at the level of what will likely be the most demanding in our short history in 2019.

04-cheers

FWIW, NSU is probably better than Hampton was. NSU returns a lot. They have a very good OL with 4 starters that have played a ton of games. THey have a very good secondary. They return the leading rusher. Return the dual threat QB.

I got to hear a VT fan behind me yell it after Peoples broke for 87 yards on their second possession. And I enjoyed his walk of shame out of our stadium when the inevitable set in and the Monarch faithful were howling to let our victory be known.

Anything less is extremely disappointment - and Wilder better pack his bags if this is a loss. The opening loss to liberty last year still hurts...but this is Norfolk State. No excuses on opening day in our new stadium.

I am cautiously optimistic about our defense as I am very impressed with Blackwell. Personnel wise, our DBs look good as do our LBs.
If the Dline gels, we should hold NSU to under 14.

What we do on offense will be largely dependent on the OL.
If the offensive line run blocks well, expect Lala and Strong to have a big day, with Robert Washington getting much needed playing time as well.
If the OL is not where it needs to be, the offense will be all about the QB, who will need to both pass and run.
Whether the OL is up to speed or not, I expect to see both Smartt and deWeaver getting plenty of snaps.
While our WRs are still a question mark, I believe that they will be more than adequate vs NSU.

I have heard that we will be OK with the kicking game.
I have no idea about kickoff/punt returns, or coverage of both.

It is otherwise it is too early to look at matchups and schemes.

As noted above, we need to completely dominate on both sides of the ball. If we falter on either, we are in for long and disappointing season.

With that, ODU 48, NSU 10
EDIT: Any closer will be a fail, as NSU is predicted to finish 7th of 9 in the MEAC.

Is there even a depth chart yet? Y'all are going to be too exhausted from posting your armchair analysis to even make it to the game at this rate.

This is my informed depth chart at this point:

QB: Smartt (more accurate and better runner), deWeaver
RB: Davis, Washington, Strong, (Geiger banged up)
WR: Kumah, S. Williams (surprisingly good), Patterson, Spencer, Harvey (weakest group)
TE: Anthony, Cunningham (he is underwhelming so far)
OL: Weaver ©, Kounta (LT), Saldiveri (RT), Barnett (LG), Muller (RG) (group looking pretty good)

DL: Haynes (bandit), Meiser, Ross, K. White/Wilder
LB: Garner, Young
S: Brewton, Richardson, Moss/Scott
CB: Boykin, Ford-Dement, Brocchini, G. Hall (nickel) (strong group)

Any changes since the scrimmage? 05-stirthepot

Yeah, that falls in line with my general prediction of 2-3 wins, and I think I'm being generous.

Anyway, enough pessimism from me now. You all know where I stand. I will root hard for this team and enjoy the new stadium and will hope to be surprised

Henry is the new starting bandit.

He was certainly one of the three (Haynes, Dickerson and Henry), that Ed Miller proposed back in April.
Quote:The candidates took different paths to the new position. The 6-4, 227-pound Dickerson has spent his career as a reserve linebacker and special teams stalwart. The 6-4, 215-pound Haynes has been an under-sized defensive end. The 6-2, 215-pound Henry, a late bloomer who did not play high school football, had six sacks and two interceptions as a linebacker at ASA College in Miami last season.

I'd play Williams at QB and play him a lot. He knows the offense very well and would probably perform pretty well in that first game. Very important to get this year off to a good start vs a bad one so I'd play it conservatively--meaning try to stabilize some with so many new players.

I have no doubt as to accuracy of CalODUFan's posts. Even he seemed surprised that SW was listed 1st team.
I hope that means that SW has played that well, and is not a testament to the lack of quality personnel at the WR position.
