RE: Dudley: Spencer Brown energizes offense in UAB’s 1st scrimmage
Sounds like a good day. I hope the OL is getting settled, and that we can develop a solid starting unit, and some decent depth.
One question: Rajae Johnson got a lot of hype, coming in as a 4-star from juco at WR. But I have yet to hear his name mentioned among the receiver corps, even when they go two-deep in discussing players (as TJ did in this article). I wonder how he is doing, and if he is going to contribute this year? I know he missed this past season with injury, and I wonder if he is healthy yet. Anyone with insight?

Is the offensive line good, or the D-line bad? Plus, who sat out of the practice? Key questions.

He’s obviously not in the two deep, maybe the 7th wideout who still gets a good amount of targets. This the best six receivers we’ve ever had imho he adds to that.
My biggest question why 1s vs 2s, not big on big.

It’s actually ingenious .. by having the backup guys go against the first talent, you force them to get better.. I think it creates a better 2nd and 3rd group. That’s the only time they’ll see quality competition in front of them. Blowout wins usually give them experience against guys that aren’t as good.

Yeah great points, but I’d rather still see 1’s and 1’s . Doubt we go all three deep at many spots.

Rajae Johnson will have to learn the offense. Hes had only a week of
Practice. Others have hqd a year or more. Wouldnt expect to see too much of him the first few games. And we have other talent so he will have to earn his rotation time. He will be a difference maker eventually.

Anyone know if Patrick Nuss is practicing? Didnt see his name in the article that talked about the offensive line competition. Only Wells. Is Nuss injured?

Maybe 2nd string LT, nobody was named there.

RE: Dudley: Spencer Brown energizes offense in UAB’s 1st scrimmage
Coach Clark's scheme seems to build a strong team for the future by providing the starters with strong backups who will play extensively in the future. The 4-game redshirt rule been prominent in this. He's been able to build strong secondary players(future starters) who might be almost as good as the starters but could be starters in the future and have an extra redshirt year to be such. There have been so many which is why this year's team isn't what folks outside of UAB realize what could be. A case in point is be the WR Watkins. He was getting good playing time early last season but we had seniors who were as good. So his contribution would have been in a diminished secondary role. He took a redshirt and is on par to (potentially) be a star of UAB for the next two years rather than one. Same with another WR Myron Mitchell. I see Rajae Johnson as the same. Playing 4 games this season, getting a redshirt and being available to UAB as a 3-year star(ter) beginning in 2020.

Rajae is a RSo. Nobody can redshirt there but brown.

Very rarely do you see 1v1. As someone else pointed out it is to get the 2s better and see how people compete. During the callaway and McGee era I know we usually put 1v2

This scrimmage wasn't that important anyway. Why would you go 1 vs 1 when guys are still learning things. You probably will see 1 vs 1 in the last live scrimmage.

I also thought Johnson was a sophomore; however, the online roster has him listed as a junior. They changed it from a Rs sophomore to a junior. Anyone got confirmation on his classification?

Sucks if he doesn’t get the redshirt, wouldn’t have a clue on finding out. Wonder why he thought he got it per the recruiting video. A good five guys leaving, unless Demetrius Davis is getting a 6th year.

Looks like he played injured last year rather than sitting the injury out...
