Some of that doesn't add up though. If he really wanted to be home and play for the Tigers, and he really didn't know deals were cut behind his back, then why didn't he transfer? Some of that story today sounds like convenient revisionist history.
Transfers seemed to be a bit more complicated back then. According to Tony, he was told Memphis never offered him and had no interest. Also, once his family was paid, I could imagine him feeling obligated and stuck.
Also (I am not sure how much stock you may put into what Easterwood says) Easterwood has backed up his story and has claimed to have watched it all unfold and there was nothing he could do about it.
And Tony had nothing to gain by telling his story. It was over 20 years ago. I think he really just wanted to set the record straight.
Reputation? Street cred?
Not sure how his story would benefit in either area. He no longer lives in Memphis and I am willing to say the rest of the world doesn't care.

What can he say? TN don’t mean shite to us given as how they usually aren’t good enough to go to tournament? True rivalries take years to build. Media has tried to build this one. I doubt most Tigers fans would include them in top 5 rivals if asked to name 5.
We should play UT in football/basketball every year. I don’t understand why people on here don’t want this. It’s a good thing for both programs.

We just aren't stuck in the 90s. There's no rivalry. We've barely played in the last 20 years.
They are no different than any other SEC school. We just share a state with those entitled brats.
Those monsters don't do anything for us. Maybe we can play them when these numbers are equal.
University of Memphis: 117,771,000
UT Knoxville: 231,382,200
Until then, honestly. I don't care.
Please excuse my ignorance, but what do those numbers represent?
State Budget Appropriations.

Absolutely. Don't forget the timing when he released his version of the story. It was when the city was going crazy about Tyler's hot start.
Tony has admitted that he missed out on feeling the love of the city.

That's because you don't work in an office building or job site actually IN Memphis, so you don't have a bunch of jackasses looking down their noses at you over the water cooler. When you live and work here, the condescension is palpable.
Fair enough, my office has a higher IQ.
Well, I'm also assuming your office is in Jacksonville, Florida, like your info says...

That's what I figured.
I don't know if the UT number includes all their campuses or not, but total enrollment at the 5 campuses is 49,000 per the google machine, or $4,722 per student. If it is just for Knoxville (28,321), then it's $8,172 per student.
Memphis enrollment is 20,585, or $5,721 per student.
F*%$ 'em either way.

I'll admit that. The question is, is it deserved.
