Memphis was 19th in ESPNs 50 in 50 rankings done after the 2011 season. Went to 4 straight NCAA tournaments after that so we probably haven’t dropped if it were to be updated. Would have been 15th if not for Kirk and Cal probations. Consistently in top 20 in virtually all of these I have seen.

1997 not a great cut off point for us.

1997 sure is such an arbitrary start period.

1997 is when KENPOM started keeping stats. So an understandably arbitrary year for KENPOM.

Ah, makes sense

But yes, 1982-1996, the year before kenpom were overall really good for Memphis

11 NCAA tourneys
Advancements in most of those years including the final four, sweet 16 losses to Houston, Penny’s elite eight team etc...

A little more perspective: 82-89 7 of 8 years of NCCA appearances (probation robbed us of a top ten team at the end of the year of going to 87 tournament). 4 straight S16s including 1 F4 and we were jobbed by the NCAA in seeding 3 years that we had F4 material but played Phi Slamma Jamma two straight years in SWEET SIXTEEN and then in 86 on 11th seeded LSUs home floor in a controversial game. We could have went to 4 straight F4s but Dana (RIP) had to thumb his nose at NCAA rather than kissing butt.

Also leaves out Penny’s 2 Tournaments with an elite eight and Lorenzens 2 with a S16. In fact, we went to tourney 4 of 5 years before KPs starting season.

I personally would put us between 15 and 20, so 22 while low, isn't too unfair. Penny just needs to show what he has shown in every other level of coaching.

Pomeroy used a 15% conference bias in these rankings. He admitted it when questioned about why UConn - with more national champs than anyone since 1997 - was as low as #19. (He also didn't give bonus points for NCAA tourney success, which is sort of odd - but defensible.)

Makes you wonder how much conference bias is buried in his proprietary algorithm.

That makes his ranking a fraud. Making the Tournament should be the biggest factor IMO but advancing has to be factored in also. And by giving so called top conferences a 15% kicker when the B10 and PAC 12 last won National Championships in 2000/1997 (given over 350 very good bids with good seeds & good locations) respectively makes his ranking a outright fraud.

If Penny don't make the sweet 16 this year, it will be the 1st decade we haven't made a S16 since the 60's.

Been thinking the same too but it won’t be in this decade but the 20s. Been trying for the life of me how to spin it back into the 10s.
