Cody Toppert interview
Shout out the 92.9 with all the interviews they have had today. Great promotion for the U of M.

Cody was interviewed by Drew Hill. Love to hear Cody talk basketball. If you haven't heard him, he will be a treat. If you like to hear Penny talk bball, you will love him. He's the antithesis of Josh.

<iframe src="https://omny.fm/shows/92-9-featured-podcast/memphis-tigers-audio-cody-toppert-with-drew-hill-o/embed" width="100%" height="180px" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Some of the highlights I enjoyed:

11 guys on our roster has the potential to play and make a living after they leave the university. (Cody played overseas. Not everyone will be NBA, but they have a future in the game.)

Loves the length, size and athleticism, will and want to of this team.

Spacing is important to play wide open and help players operate in space.

Goal in not to be a 3 point shooting team but a rim attack team. If we can get to the rim, defense collapse get to the 3 or 4 level rotation for long closeouts which will open the 3's. They would love for our guys to shoot when their feet are set. If we go side to side, then we shoot more contested 3's. He trusts and have great confidence in Alex and DBaugh shooting when their feet are set.

Spacing and the other talent around Alex will help him knock those shots down. He will be massive early in the season.

No player combination is off limits in the Bahamas. Small, Big. Penny's puts them in lineups in practice to force them to share the ball, make quick decisions and figure things out.

The team will show us what it is. Personnel builds your offense and defense.

RE: Cody Toppert interview
Are you saying Lomax will be “massive” at the beginning of the season? I had expressed my concerns about not recruiting a true PURE PG but who can argue with not only the best recruiting class in the country but also the most balanced if you consider Boogie a PG which most everyone does.

This statement by Cody bothers me in regards to several areas of our team. It generally has been assumed that Boogie would start at point and was capable of running both transition and half court offense.

It has also generally said that Penny wants to pay position less basketball and the perimeter players would be somewhat interchangeable; along with Alo playing off the bench (again generally assumed here and by most social media basketball types).

So in view of those generally accepted assumptions balanced against Cody’s statement regarding Alo brings up a number of concerns to me-if true then:

Boogie must be underperforming in running the team.
Our other perimeter guys are not as position less as some thought
How could Alo be massive when you have the likes of Wiseman, Precious, DJ, Lester and our other talented players?

Or Cody has completely misread this team.

I listened to the interview and I didnt get the same take on it.

He did say ALo was making shots in practice when he had his feet set. He also followed with the disclaimer... I don't know what they did last season, all I can base it on is what I have seen in practice. Also said if the spacing was right that ALo could get more time to get set for his shots basically. More than anything he talked about his leadership and floor general abilities, said he was a bulldog on the defensive side.

The massive side of Alo play is from the leadership side not point wise. If the freshmen run into difficulty, they are counting on Alo to calm things down.

Wait.... so, an Ivy league educated, former pro ball player and coach with NBA experience, doesn't share your negative view of ALo and HE'S the one that's wrong!?!!

That is absolutely classic! 03-lmfao

You should probably listen to the interview. What is he supposed to say? The kid sucks and has no place? No, he talks about his strengths instead, leadership, floor general, bulldog, if he can keep his feet set maybe make some shots, etc.

Derrick rose was the best PG we have had in the modern era. He didn’t quite get the PG role until late January of 2008. Give them a chance to develop. Alo May very well be our best option early.

wait. We’re concerned about the in game leadership skills of a player who was the team leader of teams that won multiple middle school and multiple high school state championships? When he was productive enough last year to play significant time in games, he was the clear leader on the floor; even as a freshman.

Thank God you think the exact opposite of someone with a brain who is actually with the players every day.

Enlighten me. What is the correlation between Ivy League education and basketball coaching success?

If this ultra talented team has to rely on Alo to win games, we are in trouble. There is a top 30 player and other highly rated combo guards to jump over for PT. I can see him having a role but not a “massive” role.

I hear you. I was referring only to Alo being “massive” early.

I remember it to be exactly the opposite. Rose deferred too much and Cal was telling him to stop.
