Jake Griffith Talks To Former Marshall GK Paulo Pita

Looks like the NCAA has a proposal to make soccer a year round sport and mimick the pro level. Non Conference games in the fall and Conference games and NCAA in the spring. Those who follow pro soccer do you think this is a better set up or would you rather keep it as a fall sport (Sept-Dec).

Personally, I love it. We already play in the spring, might as well make it count. Soccer is a growing sport, and making it go head to head all season with college football is dumb. We have really good fan support, but I know personally, I've made it less of a priority since adding football. That said, a big Saturday game in March, double header with a baseball game at noon? Sign. me. up.

Im split on this at a personal level, Ive always enjoyed college athletics as a whole and follow almost every sport. Now even paying attention to Marshall T&F more because a lady I grad with her daughter is on scholarship as a thrower (Discus, Hammer and Weight). Ive always liked how each sport is wrapped up as a neat package in 4 months or under.

But I understand Pita's response. Those who are drafted in the MLS are behind the 8 ball. They get drafted in Jan and don't play a game for at lest another 3 months. I see where only playing 3 months out out of the year can put you behind with the jump from college to pro and not playing full game speed for almost 5 months. Especially as the game and reaction time speeds up with the upped level of competition.

Respectfully every college sport is year round. We just don’t call it that. Soccer has one of the more active “off-season” of any sport. Charlotte plays a full spring schedule every year. It’s honestly dumb that these games don’t count.

Marshall plays a full spring schedule too and there are nonprofessional summer leagues. But Ive also talked to and heard that the spring schedule (as it doesn't count) isn't really taken that seriously and is used more for strength and weakness and line up changes. Same for nonprofessional summer leagues. The NP summer leagues might as well be club level because they take any level player, The hodge podge of good, decent, mediocre to poor players doesn't make it that appealing to play in most times.

Not to bad for a coach starting his 4th year at a program that really had no history of consistency. Not going to bad mouth Bob Gray who coached Marshall soccer for 22 years. For 19 of those years his hand was delt bad. He done more than what most could have done with the facility he had.

Rice women upset #12 Texas A&M last night 3-2. Rice was down 2-0 before mounting a great rally that began with this impressive goal.

Even when The Vet opened in 2013, if you would have told me Marshall would be even a Top 25 program let a lone a Top 10 program I would have ask you what drug you were on.

In 2017 our Men's soccer coach Bob Gray retied after being at Marshall 21 years (1995-2016). Gray overall was 129-127-15. Marshall was never horrible but we were never really consistent, as you can see we were usually good for a break even season. But for 18 of Gray's 21 years he was handicapped, until the Vet opened in 2013 Marshall soccer played on a field pushed up against Joan C Edwards stadium. How Gray actually recruited there is beyond me.

When Gray retired the Marshall hire wasn't hard. They just went 54 miles away and hired Chris Grassie the head coach at the University of Charleston. Grassie in 6 years at UC turned them into a power with 2 DII Chamionship game, 2 Final Fours, an Elite 8 and a Sweet 16. UC is now on their 2nd coach after Grassie in Daniel Smee after Dan Stratford took the WVU job after the 2019 season.
