Dwyer Basketball Endowment
I received a package today asking my wife and I to donate money toward the Dwyer Basketball Endowment. I guess W&M Athletics wants to raise $500,000 for this.

Interested in your thoughts on this.[Image: 335f784024924f5a906b5e91b1479659.jpg]

I received an e-mail saying a package was coming. Thought it was the football tix. Maybe I was wrong.

RE: Dwyer Basketball Endowment
Both came today ... football tix wrapped in a garden flag (very cool!) ... and the Dwyer scholarship. I understand from the letter that $500K has already been raised.

I feel the same way about Bobby that I feel about Tony. Glad to see that at least one of them has gone out with 100% appreciation.

RE: Dwyer Basketball Endowment
Does anyone have any background on this effort?

I am hoping it is part of plan to increase the school's commitment to the MBB program and that it has the active support of the Kaplan's and the Ukrop's is a good sign.

I am a little surprised that the focus is on endowing a MBB scholarship(s?). I understood that W&M was fully committed to providing all 13 MBB scholarships and to some extent summer scholarships. So is this a net add to the program or another case where money privately raised for MBB allows the school to pull money to support other athletic programs.

One of the unfortunate side effects of the decision to move on from Shaver is that this message board is not quite the source of information it once was. I am asking this question to better understand where this initiative fits, not to stir the pot again.

It's fairly possible that the reduction in giving to MBB over the past 5 months forced our administration to raise the lost money under the banner of "do it for the Dwyers."

Based on a few conversations, some folks no longer contribute to information sharing on this messageboard because previous attempts were met with disdain and they no longer wish to waste their time talking with people who refuse to keep an open mind. From the Shaver and from the Huge camps.

An endowment is not to replace current-use funds that may or may not have been lost due to some fans' feelings about Shaver's firing. An endowment is a forward thinking funding option that eventually will free up funds for the department to use toward other basketball expenses other than tuition, room and board. It will not 'add' scholarships. Simply will replace annual fund expenditures for scholarship with endowed fund earnings. I truly think this is simply a way to honor the Dwyers in the most suitable fashion...through basketball.

RE: Dwyer Basketball Endowment
Endowment of scholarships in order to free up operating funds for other uses was the first of four "transformational investments" identified in the 2015 Competitive Excellence report, so this is definitely not a new idea in response to this year's giving.

That said, I don't know that it's clear that the "other uses" would necessarily be within the basketball program versus other departmental needs.

This effort is solely intended to honor the many decades of loyalty that Bobby showed to the College and his first passion of MBB. Bobby has dedicated his career on helping the alumni have the best possible experience to enjoy Tribe sports and has worked tirelessly to help the Tribe Club raise funds for sports scholarships. This is solely an attempt by two families that are very close to Bobby to permanently honor these efforts. Count me as an enthusiastic supporter!!
