Very shortsighted in hindsight.
Conversely, UConn would have fallen to Tulane levels due to the strength and power of VCU, but perhaps that is a sacrifice we all needed to make...
I agree with almost all of your posts, but this one is way off base (unless it is satire and the comment in bold was meant to be humorous).
For off, there is no way that the Big East would have stuck together just because of VCU. VCU was (and is) a pretty good program in a pretty good league. No more, no less. So you are telling me that ESPN, which had never offered the Big East a dime more than $7mm per full member school (which Pitt pushed the league to reject) would all of a sudden offer up $40 per full member school just because of VCU basketball? That is crazy talk..
Now, back to your quote: "UConn would have fallen to Tulane levels due to the strength and power of VCU"
What? UConn, Syracuse, an Louisville were performing at a higher level in basketball than anyone in thae old configuration of the Big East. An incoming VCU would have made such a seismic shift in league power?
Let's compare historical postseason and conference results between UConn and VCU to see just how asinine this assertion is.
VCU
NCAA Tournament Final Four - 2011
NCAA Tournament Elite Eight - 2011
NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen - 2011

This is UConn's post-season and regular season conference resume:
Conference Tournament Champions (all years were in old Big East except 1976 and 2016) - 1976, 1979, 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2011, 2016
Conference Regular Season Champions (all years starting with 1990 were in old Big East)- 1925, 1926, 1928, 1941, 1944, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1976, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006
So, UConn (who accomplished what they did in the tough Big East) would have all of a sudden become Tulane having to compete against a VCU team that has done far less in the much easier A-10 and Horizon? That doesn't even begin to make sense.
If the assumption is that Shaka Smart would have stuck around if VCU had been admitted to the Big East and that VCU would continue to be a rising force if in the Big East, it can only be taken as a theory. Maybe VCU would have been as good, but maybe they would have stunk in a tougher league. But VCU would have reduced UConn to Tulane? Good one.
Yep, I missed that it was a joke. My bad.
