There is more buzz this year than I can ever remember you just have to know where to find it. The roost does an amazing job of this and almost everything is on twitter.....I know more about this team than any other I can remember

I think we will pass more while being chased. Third and nine seems to always end up like that, I wonder who is going to throw those passes?

I caught part of a practice and defense is playing really well. 7on7 passes seem to be good but things get really rough when we line up against the defense. I may not know what I'm looking at but the QB drops back and QB was rough at best

From everything I've heard and read, the defense is going to be vastly improved. Unfortunately, the offense is very much a work in progress. If the offense can't keep the defense off the field, the improvement in the D will be for naught.

He did a great job, but I think The Roost has filled the void admirably. We had no meaningful coverage after Bower left the Chronicle. He was a rare gem in that he had a real affinity for Rice athletics. The two or three that followed him had no real interest whatsoever, often splitting their time between us and the Texans. We were an afterthought. We've needed an outlet that's completely committed to us for a long time. I wish I knew who operates and writes for The Roost. I'd like to shake their hands.

And let's not forget about the incredible efforts of Rice football.net all these years. That man is a warrior. When no one cared about us, we could always depend on him to be there. Amazing coverage. Amazing dedication. There may not be a bigger Rice Football fan.

It was almost like the defense knew what was coming...by this time in practice I would assume they have seen everything. If QB dropped back and was throwing to a spot then it was OK, if making reads Defense was too quick. If #14 is legit....I didn't see any example of that.

He's Matthew Bartlett (who's an Aggie and a natural gas analyst).

I have forgotten my password, and efforts to change it or get a new one have me running in circles. I note the practice reports will be restricted after the season starts. Matthew, help me!

Thanks. I just saw that. I was on his site listening to the latest podcast about the offense.

Concerning the wide receivers, they make it sound like Cephus could be out for the season, or even indefinitely. It doesn't sound good for this position. Very little proven talent outside of Trammel, and no depth.

Jovani Johnson is a true freshman QB that is turning heads. He's not in the running for the starting position, but the guy has incredible athletic ability.

They believe that Green is being groomed to be a "multi-year starter." In retrospect, it was probably a good move for the coaches to redshirt him. He now has four years of eligibility, and can use this season to really learn the offense and develop his skills. I was happy to hear this.

Actually, it was mentioned that Johnson's ability have put him in the top three. I have to go find where I read/heard it, but there is a quote that says something to the effect that one out of the three QBs is expected to be the starting QB at the end of the year: 1. Wiley Green, Tom Stewart, or Jovoni Johnson. The chatter about Johnson is that he is a natural leader, has a great arm, and has excellent mobility. Stranger things have happened, but Johnson could be the answer at QB not just for the future, but for the present. But the safe choice seems to be Green or Stewart.

I looked at some of Stewart's film from Harvard. He throws a very accurate deep ball with excellent touch. I could easily see him winning the job. I think that he is a better prospect at QB than Stank. His mobility may not be a great strength and this is where I really like Marshmann. But it looks like Evan might not get back into the top three, barring injury, until Spring 2020. By top three, I don't mean depth chart, but QBs being groomed to be the starter. If Johnson stalls in his grasp of the offense, a redshirt might be forthcoming and Marshmann would be the 3rd option.

Still, somewhat exciting to have a serious and meaningful conversation about the QB battle.

2nd year coaches who could make a big leap in 2019 (well we're mentioned but just barely). There are 19 NCAA coaches entering their 2nd year this season.

(from the article)

In a coach's first year, his team's average change in S&P+ rating is minus-1.03, with a minus-0.12 average change in win total. By Year 2, the average change is plus-2.59 (plus-0.87 win total). In Year 3, the average change in S&P+ rating is plus-1.44 (plus-0.26 win total).

Over those 10 years, 70% of second-year coaches enjoyed a win total at or above that of their first year and 63% saw their S&P+ rating improve (46% by at least three adjusted points per game, 17% by at least 10).

If that trend were to continue for this year's 20 second-year coaches, approximately 13 of them will improve on paper, including three by a large amount.

I don’t care about wins, I just want us to have a good S&P rating. Buy low, sell high!

Marshmann????

Stewart, Johnson, Green
Stewart starts and green backs up but doesn’t play. Johnson starts 4 games saves the redshirt but plays. Green isn’t really blooms guy. He got hired and signed green and Townes for media and hype. Johnson is his recruited player. The investment is with him.
