Fall Camp?
Anyone hearing anything? I think the Owls have been in camp for several days and no threads here. Any news on QB's? How about the transfers or freshmen?

Even for our apathetic bunch it's odd to have so little chatter once Fall Camp hs started. I'm out of town and out of touch so dependent on this place for info. Help!

Check out The Roost. They are putting out regular updates.

Yes- it's nice to have another outlet following the Owls. Commentary there and here is still pretty sparse though. Not that I don't understand- 3 wins in 2 years....

Chuck Pool has posted nice profiles of Blaze Alldredge (Aug 4) and Clay Servin (Aug 2). But the "Second Scrimmage Video" on the football site seems to be from Spring, not Fall practice.

And they clearly don't know what they're talking about. Regardless to what happens this year, Bloom will get at minimum a 3rd year to prove himself. Do these guys have a clue how bad a state the football program was in when Bloom was hired?

Meh, it depends on the "hot seat" criteria. Objectively, any coach who managed just 1 FBS win last year and no improvement from the year before ought to be in danger of getting run if this year turns out to be no better (or heaven forbid, worse).

But I agree that if a hot seat list is supposed to take into account the actual willingness of a school to fire a coach, then yeah, these guys don't know what they're talking about. Clearly unfamiliar with our peculiar institutional disinterest in athletics, the historical timidity of our athletic department in holding coaches accountable for results, etc.

Wouldn't bother me if Bloomgren, at any rate, took the list seriously and coached like his job was at stake.

RE: Fall Camp?
Maybe they somehow read the junk we had on here a couple of years ago about how we should be quick on the trigger, and if something isn't working to fire the coach immediately whether or not he has had a fair chance. I argued against that viewpoint then and do so now. If the AD asks my opinion, Bloom gets three years minimum. More if he is showing promise/progress. Only fair.

But it is going to be hard to show much progress this year, against this schedule. Looks like like all the eggs are in the 2020 basket. Promise is like potential - it means you ain't done it yet.

I wanted to see more last year, and want to see more than expected this year.

Good luck in 2019, Rice Owls and Bloom. Surprise some folks. Surprise me.

Yes, we didn’t give the last coach nearly enough time to prove himself.

Whooosh.

That was the point of those rants - that we needed to cut the cord immediately, if not sooner, if it appeared the coach wasn't working out. Of course, the second year for the last coach was a ten win season with a bowl win. Hard to cut the cord after that. Sure would like to see that again. Sooner rather than later.

Funny to see some of the same people who were ranted about cutting the cord early are now sitting on their hands. I guess 2-23 sounds good to them.

Sounds like you will be OK with a 0-12 or 1-11 season this year, as long as the coach is AnybodyButBailiff. Personally, I would be satisfied with 4 wins in 2019 - that would indicate a lot of progress to me. Doesn't have to be 10.

But if any record is OK, maybe my standards are too high.

Sure they do. They just have a different agenda than you.

And this matters how?

RE: Fall Camp?
Does anyone know if any of these twitter folks that write about Rice football (especially "the Roost") actually attend all practices, or is their access limited to maybe post-practice or occasional attendance? I would love to read reports of what actually happened in a practice similar to what other writers report on other schools. What we get other than from the team seems to be post-practice interviews and "word is" reporting. Is there anywhere to read "QB2 pulled the ball down in the team drill and ran for a 45 yard TD untouched", rather than "Reports are Newbie Jones is really turning heads out there"?

Good point. I’ve wondered the same thing. I really like The Roost, but have been curious about their sources. First hand observation?

22 days. I am not sure how much advantage, if any, we gain from keeping our starting QB a secret from Army. But I think we lose some interest among the Rice faithful, we few, by keeping every-damn-thing secret from us. Some buzz would be nice. Buzz creates interest.

Geez, it's only the first week of camp, and only the 2nd day with pads. Highly unlikely that the QB decision has been made yet, and if it is a legit competition, I doubt Bloom will make his decision for another couple weeks.

I realize that the QB hasn't been selected yet, but I would like to hear how the horse race is going before we reach the finish line.
