I don’t believe it’s open to the public, though. Not sure.

If the offense is so complex how does Stewart beat out Green? Doesn’t make sense.

Yeah really. He went to Harvard. That’s not near the academic level of Rice. That line is BS. Complexity is not the issue. That’s just a good term to use to justify playing who you want. “We are going with _____ because understands the offense better right now”. Blah blah blah. That offense is not that complicated. It’s all on a wristband and the QB has a choice to make based on the front he gets. Not that “complex” to count and pick the play.

I think that's way off. Stewart is a seasoned veteran. Green has only started four games. Bloomgren is going to play the best players. Period. Who's to say Green doesn't win the starting job? Your cynicism/callousness can be a little over the top sometimes.

Not sure if the Roost reads this board, but the coverage of the scrimmage today was great!

You are correct I can be a lot over the top but to say Bloom is going to play the BEST players all the time is an absolute joke. Sorry just isn’t true but whatever. Hope he can scratch some wins out.

Tom started 8-9 games about twice as many as Green. Different offense and lower level of football. He is a pure pocket passer so he will start. That is what the position calls for.

If the key to our offense is the QBs getting us in the right play, help me calculate this:

1. We are openly a run dominant offense scheme. That is what we call primarily as a play and that is what we want to do. "Pound the Rock."

2. We are an "NFL system" offense.

3. Three Owls won the CUSA Academic Medal this year. 2 of those (Green and Towns) are QBs. Stewart has a degree from Harvard and is in the Rice MBA program. Marshman was academic all conference.

4. Of all NFL QBs running a pro-style offense who can "get their team in the right play", I would bet Green, Stewart, Marshman and/or Towns would score higher on an IQ test than at least half of them (and probably much higher than that).

So, why do we have so little success running the ball? You don't need an NFL arm to hand off the ball, and all of our QBs seem to be able to take a snap. Is it really that none of our QBs are smart enough to count defenders and make the right call (if that is how it is done - I really don't know what they read off of pre-snap), or is it something else?

He does. Talked at length with Matt today. He’s all in as far as keeping the roost going ever better. But we’ve got to have greater participation in roost, not only clicks, but commentary from Parliamentarians, whatever, to bring it where it has a chance to be. Matt has some ideas. Obviously he has the writing skills and football scope, he’s shown he’s been willing to put in the time. He needs more audience participation.

I’m going to be out of country between Aug 14 and 26th put will post what I can on Ricefootballnet. DSE and I are moving toward more of an “aggregator”-orientedsite, which I’ve been wanting to to for years. (We’ll still make the road trips and come back with photos and videos....). Have some ideas. Will get back later when more time, to discuss.

??? The running game depends very little on the QB and much more on the quality, experience and skill set of the OL. As was evident last year at Stanford, even a guy with the exceptional speed and vision of a Bryce Love cannot make plays if his OL can't open up even the slightest of holes or provide several yards of push.

exactly. The fact that the majority of our offense doesn't work very well isn't on the QBs.

Been saying since bloom came to town. Any monkey can run the offense. We just aren’t good enough up front unfortunately. Big strong d line guys are all over the map but quality Oline guys for the Bloom system are few and far between.

Lol really look like a moron when you say things like “big strong D line guys are all over the map”. Dline is the hardest position to recruit for every school.

Dave Campbell's gives our OL a C-. Not encouraging, but no one knows how well the grad transfers will perform. Apparently we had a lot of injuries along the line in the Spring.

Green and/or Towns may well have great Rice careers, but it’s unclear to me how signing two two-star private school QBs (although Jesuit does play with public schools) with no other FBS offers generates “hype”.

I though it was a joke as well but I sure as heck remember twitter and this board lit up talking about it. Created conversation. That’s all. Didn’t say the hype was a good thing for the future of the program it was just something for the fan oops I mean fans to grasp onto at the moment and talk about.

Reality here folks, Rice football is a smoldering dumpster fire. We aren’t good enough to be burning. Ok fine we scored a couple times today....against ourselves. That means absolutely nothing. Hopefully Bloom can turn this thing around before his contract is up but honestly just don’t see it. My personal opinion is that I believe his scorched earth I only want my players mindset was bad for the program that was already struggling. Took some guys that understand Rice and what it meant to play in front of a couple dozen fans and not let that be a downer. He chose the my guys mentality and maybe that will work in time. If it does then he will go down as a good coach and program builder. If it doesn’t work out he will be coaching oline for the Bills or Saskatchewan Roughriders in a couple years.

I think you may be able to get away with "scorched earth I only want my guys" at a football factory where there is plenty of talent around.

But at a place like Rice, where you are chronically short of depth, I think you have to try to figure out how to use everybody you have one way or the other. Maybe that means you have to make some changes in scheme. But I think you have to put your 22 best athletes on the field and see what happens, whether they are your guys or somebody else's guys. And your schemes have to be ones that let you get your best 22 on the field. I don't want to get beat with one of my best 22 standing on the sideline.
