RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
I stepped on a Garter snake yesterday. I felt so bad for it. :( It was cute a hell.

RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
Living in NC and in the country, I've surprisingly never come across a live venomous snake.

I actually owned a pet Corn Snake when I was in middle school ... I'd feed it live mice and it was the coolest thing ever. LOL
As a snake enthusiastic when I was a kid, I quickly learned the difference from a venomous snake to nonvenomous. (color patterns, diamond shaped head, exc.). I'll gladly keep a King Snake or Black Snake around if it means no mice ... the dangers of diseases from mice/rats scare me far more then a nonvenomous snake.

Ticks me off that people don't understand more about snakes. I run a hardware store and folks come in looking for sulpher and snake away to run them off and talk about killing king snakes. Leave a king snake alone. The kill rats and, most important, venomous snakes. There is a reason they are called a KING snake!! LOL

Yeah, nothing wrong with non poisonous snakes. Learn the poisonous snakes in your area, and you can kill those if you come across one, but otherwise, let 'em be.

Yep, King Snakes are some of the most docile animals I know. They'll get rid of a lot of other unwanted critters in the area. I'll have friends and such inform me if they find a snake and I'll get it and let it out back in the woods on my property. I understand if they're in the house, but they have an important role and need to left alone if can help it.

RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
I was bitten by a copperhead last year in my yard. Worst pain I've experienced about an hour after the bite. Spent 6 hours in the ER and 6 weeks on crutches. I don't recommend it.

RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
I have spent a good bit of time in the Forests of Western NC as well as the Wetlands of South Georgia (Okefenokee and surrounding area) so I've encountered several venomous snakes...mostly in Georgia. I've seen Copperheads on several occasions in NC. In Georgia, I've seen Copperheads, Cottonmouth, 2 types of rattle snakes (Pygmy and Eastern Diamondback).

My brother has seen all three types of rattlesnakes indigenous to South Georgia ON HIS PROPERTY (Pygmy, Eastern Diamondback, and Timber rattler). Several years ago one of his dogs was bitten on the face by a Copperhead. Yes he lived but he was miserable for a while.

I have a healthy respect for venomous snakes and give them plenty of room, but no particular fear.

What size was the dog?

Like I said earlier my ~60 lb dog was bitten on the face by a Copperhead. Other than about 12 hours of swelling she didn't seem to exhibit any signs of pain at all and acted like nothing happened by the next morning.

That's the only time she's been bitten but I'm hoping that's how she'd handle a future bite as well.

He was about an 80 lb. boxer mix named Peedee (like the river). Brother said he was pitiful and his face was so swollen he couldn't lay his head down for a day or so. It did leave a scar but he recovered completely. I think my brother said the anti-venom shot cost like $500 or some ridiculous amount but I don't think he was able to get him to a place that had it within the recommended time.

It's been a while, so my recollection might not be accurate. I'm sure the reaction varies depending on the severity of the bite (how much venom was injected). Glad your dog is OK!

When I was a kid, we had an English Setter that liked to roam the woods and had a bad habit of pointing snakes. Got bit more than once. Face would swell up for a while then she would be back to normal. Girl never did learn her lesson. Great bird dog.

The antivenin at my hospital is $6k per vile. Protocol is to give 4 viles in the first round then 4 more if needed. So $24k - $48k 04-jawdrop

Holy Cow!!! I guess the moral of that story is that, if you get bitten by a snake, go to the vet! LOL

Spoke with a girl in the park my dog was bitten and her's was bitten too and she panicked and took it to the vet. She said the bill was $2k for the anti-venom.

She asked how much I paid, I said $6 for a pack of benadryl...

RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
A couple of thanksgivings ago we purchased a well bred English Cocker from a well known quail hunting plantation in South Georgia. One day they took him out on a hunt and his owner at the time bent down to get what he assumed was a quail but turned out to be a cottonmouth. Our cocker dove in front of the owner and wrestled with the snake until it was dead. He was bit several times but made a full recovery in a couple of days. If you knew this dog you'd never expect it as he is one of the most laid back and goofy dogs i've met. He got serious that day.

I’ve encountered countless copperheads living in GA. In my H.S. Days in NC working on a tobacco farm, I had a rather fat cotton mouth drop from a stick of green tobacco as we were hanging it in a barn and land on me. Somehow it didn’t bite although it damn near killed me from the horror.

I think back now to all the sticks I hung and and hours in the field and I thank God that didn’t happen to me. I would have had a heart attack. At the very least I probably wouldn’t have ever crawled up in another barn.
