Days in NC working on a tobacco farm, I had a rather fat cotton mouth drop from a stick of green tobacco as we were hanging it in a barn and land on me. Somehow it didn’t bite although it damn near killed me from the horror.

I think back now to all the sticks I hung and and hours in the field and I thank God that didn’t happen to me. I would have had a heart attack. At the very least I probably wouldn’t have ever crawled up in another barn.

Yes, I was definitely f-ed up for a very long time after that incident. Years later, a friend was goofing around and threw a rubber snake at me and I tried to rip his head off. He didn’t know about my previous trauma and was surprisingly understanding when I turned him loose.

RE: Snakes in the Sunbelt!
About 8 or 9 years ago I chaperoned a youth float trip down Spring River in North Arkansas. About halfway through the trip a couple preteen girls let their canoe get a little to close to a shore and made contact with some overhanging tree limbs.

A cottonmouth fell out of the tree and landed squarely in the middle of the canoe. The kids bailed, the snake didn’t and the canoe just floated downstream for a good 20 minutes while all the adults argued about whose job it would be to retrieve the canoe and kill the snake.

When I was about 18 it wasn't such a bad thing to kill snakes. A couple of us would get on the St Francis and shoot snakes. You watched overhead as much as in the water. They would throw me under the jail for that today. It's a shame.
