Bowers speaks!
Bowers 'speeding up the process' of adjusting to new NIU teammates

By KALEB CARTER, The Daily Chronicle

DeKALB — Feeling like a 22-year old rookie on the NIU football team, recalling the names of all of his teammates has proved difficult in Ross Bowers' first two months in DeKalb.

Bowers says everything else is coming quickly and smoothly.

The graduate transfer from the University of California has made the most of his two months at NIU, forging relationships and learning what he needs to know about his new teammates.

"Just really trying to speed up this process of feeling like I’m a Huskie it takes a while. Coming in, it’s like you’re a freshman even though you’re 22 years old," Bowers said. "It’s trying to learn everybody’s name as fast as you can and just trying to make sure you know their backgrounds and know what makes them tick. What do you love? What do you hate? Just building that bond I think what it takes to build a really good team.”

The new quarterback who has two remaining years of eligibility. has called states all over the nation home, but has found himself settling in nicely between trips to Chipotle and chowing down on meat lover's skillet breakfast at the Junction Eating Place.

He's used his time not only throwing long passes to his new receivers, but also getting to know his teammates

“Really not forcing a bond, but giving us opportunities to bond. And that’s what’s been so fun for us, because this team actually genuinely likes each other," Bowers said. "Yeah, we did too where I came from as well, but that’s, you don’t hear that everywhere. There’s a lot of cliques and there’s a lot of animosity among the team in some of areas, so it’s nice to gets. Area where we all have the same common goal and we enjoy each other’s company doing it.”

Bowers, who played quarterback at Bothell High School in Washington, before ending up in Berkeley, California as a quarterback, recalled his high school days when comparing the culture he played in before with NIU.

“Playing for each other, that’s what I’m used to coming from a really good high school program," Bowers said. "That’s what we were taught and that’s what they preach here. That’s why I was so drawn to it, with guys like coach Hammock, coach (Eidsness) and even coach (Napoli). He’s been great.”

As a redshirt sophomore in 2017, Bowers threw for 3,039 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions and completed 61percent of his passes. After an injury and competition at the quarterback position for the Golden Bears, he transferred and ended up with the Huskies.

Bowers now is part of a three-player crew that includes returning two-year starter Marcus Childers and last year's backup quarterback, Anthony Thompson, as players duking it out to lead the offense.

“It’s three guys out there fighting hard and competing," Huskies coach Thomas Hammock said. "We would like to see two guys and then eventually one guy separate himself. But right now they’re all even.”
