Nope. It's 16 miles (usually an hour drive or L ride) between the two campuses, but their locations are almost polar opposites. Depaul is in Lincoln Park, a pristine urban neighborhood with a lot off charm; CSU is on the far south side, in an area that's not the worst in the city but still pretty rough. Nowhere near prime real estate. There's really no fit between the two, even if Depaul had the cash to buy it all and pay off their debts. It's a shame that you couldn't have moved the Jones Convocation Center to the DU campus instead of having to build Wintrust Arena off campus, it's a great arena.

Chicago State was a well intentioned college in theory, but bungled in execution. The south side deserves a decent institution to help educate its residents from a mostly lower income demographic, and instead they got an poor excuse of a college. Imo any talks of merging with other nearby public schools area are unrealistic and wouldn't solve the structural problems it faces; the best they could do now is to basically restart the institution in the same footprint but as a two-year vocational school.

3-8
2-9
8-10
7-11
12-12+

I'm pretty sure the minimum is 7 all-sports members for non-FBS D-I conferences.

Checked. Looks like you are correct.

Milwaukee was looking to add football as well.

I suspect the brand is so damaged among potential students that it needs to be reinvented.

Are there juco or trade schools close by or is that a niche the campus could fill? I would presume the campus is more than adequately equipped to serve as an extension site or branch campus of a four year school or serve as a juco partnered with a four year for degree completion.

If there is an adequate market for a juco I’d suspect there is adequate space there to host a juco campus and degree completion site.

No idea what the charter school politics are like in Chicago and Illinois but Arkansas-Little Rock is hosting a charter high school grades 10-12 on campus for a STEM emphasis charter and many of the classes are AP classes so kids can shave off time in college and cut costs. The biggest problem they’ve had is college students getting frustrated by the high school students basically taking over the cafeteria and some negative feedback by student recruitment tours coming through when the high school has lunch but I think they are supposed to have the high school students segregated into a newly renovated area of the student union at lunch.

Seems like there could be some creative repurposing done.

Students wouldn't necessarily be the problem. It's current and former CSU faculty and staff, and the higher ed community that are probably harder on it.

Chicago State, while barely able to get students now, at least can admit students. Can it attract and retain "quality" faculty and staff to operate it?

This would be a good opportunity for a private for profit school or even non-profit to buy the Chicago St campus.
Maybe do a GCU model. Maybe Amazon U could start out there.

The big plus is that they are already D1 and wouldn’t have to go through the path of going to D2 and hopefully get an invite to D1.

I guess the question would be if they're actually taking control of Chicago State and changing it to a private school or if they're just buying the campus and setting up shop once CSU dies. If it's the latter, CSU's D1 status won't matter because CSU won't exist. If it's the former, that's an interesting scenario with little if any precedent (I remember St. Paul's in Virginia was going to merge/be acquired by fellow CIAA school St. Augustine's before it fell through and SPU was shuttered, but even if it did work out, SPU had already disbanded its athletic program). How does a public school transition to a private one, and how long does it take? Would that be an opening for Grand Canyon-Chicago or Liberty-Chicago?
