RE: When the money runs out teams will gravitate back to their natural rivalries
For a 'natural' realignment to take place, you need to allow for larger conferences. Specifically, allow conferences larger than 17 (14?) to split into 3-4 divisions and have a 4-team playoff to determine a champion. This would conceivably allow a conference to grow to as big as 36, but the idea is to find successful divisions and have them conceivably split-off as a separate conference down the road, or not. You can't kick anyone out of a conference, very easily, or quickly, and it's awful politics. Conferences also don't trade schools. Merge, then split if necessary.

That way, 18-team conferences with 3 divisions of 6 become viable. 24-team conferences would be just as viable. Those divisions would be tight geographically/politically/competitively.

If Nebraska gets good that means rest of conference sucks .
Same was true when ND was playing four to five Big Ten schools.
ACC has that now its a no win perception wise.
Nebraska beats good Northwestern and Wisconsin teams well their bad then.
They are not SEC so losing to them makes you look bad.
An SEC school can play nobody out of conference and win a couple close games. Against mid ranked SEC teams their great all of a sudden.

This is true for every power conference, not just the SEC.

Clemson has breezed into the CFP the last few years playing some pretty meh schedules. Ohio State did the same thing in the first year of the playoff. Washington has done it. It's hardly exclusive to Alabama and the SEC

That's true for a P5 team that is undefeated. We should assume that any undefeated P5 team will be in the playoff. But if there are multiple one-loss teams competing for the last two spots, having a name brand is a big edge with the committee, no matter how difficult your schedule is.

Also, the media is rooting *for* Nebraska, not against them. ESPN's website probably has a dozen "Nebraska is back!!!" articles and SportsCenter segments just waiting for someone to hit "Publish" as soon as the Huskers are 3-0 or 6-1. It's another topic to fill the website and airwaves during the season. Same would be true for any other "traditional power" that has had a run of poor seasons.

This is the natural order of college football and the way things were for many years. I have never believed that chasing the almighty dollar is good for the sport nor good for the schools. A natural realignment will occur and all with the universe will be right again.

Over the millennia, men who lived near the sea thrived as fishermen, those in the forest became hunters and trappers, and people of the plains were planters and drovers. That is a natural order. Organizing college sports among geographic neighbors is simply bending to the impracticality of travel in bygone days. The big-budget programs today worry much less about travel and concern themselves with money-making alliances. The money will not dry up for them. The gravy train runs off the rails suddenly when brain damage liability outweighs the mega-revenue.

Many of us share your wish that we could return to a familiar setting. But is not based on reason or even optimism. I am afraid that it is pure senimentality. It's comforting to think about for a moment, but... no.

But the conferences would be ridiculously anti-geographic.

Any sort of rational P5 realignment is hindered by the money the Big 10 makes and the ratings the SEC gets. The Pac 12 is already fairly good geographically.

They're all pretty good geographically. WVU would be a better geographic fit in the ACC or Big Ten, but other than that the only thing that isn't geographically "orderly" is overlap between P5 conferences, and that's not a big deal.

Yeah, pretty much all of the conferences work well geographically.

I mean, if you want to put Missouri in the Big 12 or Big Ten and WVU in the ACC then that probably makes a little bit more sense. But it's not a huge issue.

The last round pulled a lot of teams out of natural rivalries. Nebraska, Missouri, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Maryland, Rutgers, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Louisville. Before that Boston College and Arkansas were the only BCS schools that didn't fit well.

Oddly enough, Boston College and Arkansas fit better in their conferences now because of the last round of realignment.

If these rivalries were so special they’d be continuing in OOC play.

Not when there is too high a chance you can lose that game .....
