If DW is not a success it was a horrible decision for our entire athletic department? Is that what you are saying?

Exactly what I am saying. I'm worried about the survival of our program for the first time since the Newell days. Decreasing enrollment, budget deficits, our bell-weather sport at the bottom of the league for 2 years straight, and now losing a great AD right before the start of the Fall sports season. No idea who will be chosen to sail the ship for the next several months. How do we find an AD (from a lower level program) or even an assistant AD who will leave their current job right in the middle of the Fall sports season? I think we'll be more or less "okay", if Darrell can have a decent season. But, if we have another disaster of a season, it's going to put us in a hole that will be tough to dig out of.

Back to the original issue, I guess it's possible that Chasse was made an offer he just couldn't refuse. But, realistically, I believe Chasse really loved Little Rock and wouldn't have moved his family to a directional school on the Mexican border unless he felt really "dissed" during the hiring of the our last men's basketball coach. I guess I was "okay" with the hiring because I assumed Chasse ultimately "came around" and was agreeable to bringing Darrell in. However, if the hiring was really forced down his throat, it was just a matter of time until he was out of here.

Chasse did a great job. But, everybody is replaceable. AND the sun came up today. Where do you rank the Flannigan hire? Holy cow that hire set us back ages.

I rank it with the Platt hire as the two worst.

I agree comparing the Flannigan to the Platt hiring. Both came off successful years, and Flannigan came off the best single year in history. Platt's came after a number of successful years. I can't believe Conque had a chance to hire the former Arkansas Tech twice, but I'll forgive him the first time because he hired the right coach in Beard. When he hired Flannigan, he could have hired several of the good high school coaches in the state, and we couldn't have done much worse.

That is true. But I am concerned that this is an indication that there are real problems in the athletic department. Terrible timing with the SpectacUALR next month, the Wrestling program about to start, and men's basketball at rock bottom. Chasse leaving, right now, for a lesser job just seems more like jumping off the Titanic than a move to better himself. A great men's basketball season would likely cure all that ails us, but I don't think the most optimistic among us see us being any better than .500 in the league.

RE: Chasse Conque steps down
Another thing worth noting is that maybe Chasse wanted to help turn around another program. I mean when was the last time anybody has heard of UTRGV making any NCAA tournament in any sport?

In an overall look at our athletic program, he left it better than when he got it after the clown left. The only mistake he had was hiring Wes (but their could've also been community social pressure since he was a LR native in his defense). So I'm hoping Chasse has a goal of helping programs turn around and become at least competitive. Which would be the best reason he left besides a sweetening of the pot deal.

We can debate on why he left but we can't do much but speculate at this point. I'm sad that he is gone and want to know why but I'm much more concerned on who is going to be hired next.

Honestly, I would be thrilled to be .500 in conference, given the situation. However, with the talent we have we ought to do better than that.

RE: Chasse Conque steps down
The problem with our assessing AD hires is that so much of the job is not visible to us. We see wins and losses, which is only a very small tip of the iceberg.

AD's leave mid-year all the time.

We "reassigned" Lee early in football season and hired Mohajir from Kansas later in the season.
UAF hired this AD after football season from Houston where he was AD.

Your pool is pretty large. Going to be a lot of Division I Associate AD's applying and you'll probably get some sitting Division II AD's apply.

I feel for the new wrestling coach. Here he is with a new program that Chasse probably stuck his neck out to get started, and now he is gone and no idea how the new guy will regard that sport.

I agree with your list but would put them in opposite order. To me, the Sidney Moncrief hire was THE #1 worst. He had zero experience in college coaching, and like the latest hire, our AD was forced to hire him no matter what the AD would have liked to do.

#2 I'd agree with the Flannigan ranking. But, a lot of times assistants in successful programs can take over and do well. But, they need to have been part of the deal for more than one year, and have that intangible that Head Coaches need to be successful. Flannigan had neither.

Platt was maybe the best recruiter our program has ever had, and therefore deserves some credit. While he was the HC at Little Rock we got Fischer, Dobbins, Joe Stephens, Malik Dixon, and other talented players. But, Platt was a horrible manager of people, which a head coach has to be.

The jury is still out on whether Darrell Walker will end up on this list.

We have had some really good and some really bad coaches. Steve was somewhere in the middle- really better than average, but not good enough to keep the "posse" from growing late in his tenure.

I guess we will survive this, like we have survived everything else in the 37 years I've lived in Little Rock. It's a little different than a coaching search, since I doubt we will hire anybody that any of us have heard of. I might start with someone who has been successful as an AD at a DII school.

Like head coach candidates, there will be a good selection to choose from. However, as tough as the Little Rock job has always been, it doesn't appear that it is getting any easier. But, since there are only about 350 Division I AD jobs in the entire country, we will get a quality pool of candidates. The "winner" will find out pretty quickly how tough of a job he or she has taken on.

Ynocpirt and I always joke it is "the toughest job in the country". There may be some DI AD jobs that are tougher, but I can't think of one. To me adding wrestling made it even tougher. I honestly don't know a single person who is a wrestling fan, but hopefully there are a bunch out there.

Well, we know that there is at least one very, very big wrestling fan out there!

Chicago State is far and away the worst job in Division I

I figure you are probably right. Last year's conference records
Baseball 5-20
Men's BB 3-28
Men's Golf last
Men's Tennis - lost in semifinals
Men's T&F 5th

Don't know anything about Chicago State. But, they probably have more basketball talent within a 5 mile radius of campus than we do in the whole State of Arkansas. Also, I just looked and they have a beautiful, relatively new (2007) 38 million dollar basketball facility that seats up to 7000 (maybe a little less for basketball). Winning in baseball and golf might be tough, but I would think the right coach could do okay there in men's basketball.
