It happens all the time.
Wally had a line in his column today saying Jeff Long was told to hire Bobby Petrino. A UA board member told me the same thing back in 2010.

Talking to a UALR booster Saturday got an earful of unhappy about DW. Was surprised by the intensity of it.

Glad to hear it. Pressure needs to be on.

I don't know a UALR fan that didn't like Chasse. Not just the fact that he was extremely personable and likeable, but that he was extremely competent and hardworking. When the news of his leaving first broke I thought it was likely because Darrell's hiring was forced on him. I've talked to enough people now that I am 100% sure that is why he left. I would think this increases the pressure on Darrell. While there is a lot more to a chancellor's job than just sports, I'm not sure the ice is not a little thinner for him as well.

How does this put MORE pressure on DW? Isn't D1 college coaching inherently high pressure? Flannigan was fired after just 2 seasons. The pressure to win is always there wouldn't you say?

I think many long-term boosters are very upset about Chasse leaving. The money folks who allegedly supported Darrell are Johnny come latelies who really don't care much, if any, about our program. The opinions of the "real" Little Rock" boosters will take precedent as Darrell's boosters quietly disappear if he doesn't win. I have never supported firing a coach after just 2 seasons, and I doubt we see that happen again. I'm just saying his seat is likely a little hotter than it would have been if everything was hunky-dory in the athletic department.

If we are not .500 this year he should be gone. That is not asking to win the conference or something unrealistic but if you can't do that its over in my opinion. That is just asking to be completely average. Beard showed what a great coach can do in 1 year, If year 2 comes and you're not average, find someone else. I have watched coaches for the last 35 years and if they weren't decent by year 2, they were never going to make it.

I agree that Chasse was universally liked and respected. Thankfully, he was able to limit DW’s length of contract and amount. Maybe that might not be relevant after this year, but I wouldn’t bet on it. And has anybody seen any evidence of monetary support from the money people who demanded this hire?

I agree, but do you think it is the position of the interim to fire the coach, because then he would have to also hire a coach. I think if you needed a new coach then it would need to be the new AD that makes the hire.

Agreed. I would assume we will have a new AD by Christmas break and by that time we will have a pretty good idea how the season is going to go.

I have seen no evidence, but I'm not sure how I would.

I have heard it will be longer than that before we have a new AD. Why that would be the case, I have no idea.

That does seem to be the case here but of course we've all heard famous cases like Coach K, John Wooden, etc. who struggled early on. I doubt Darrell will be fired after this season. Maybe if we finish last again it is a possibility. I just don't see it happening. He'll get his 3 years like every coach should.

20 losses and he is gone. .500 and he stays. In between those, I could not say.

Without a clue who the new AD is, I wouldn't make any predictions. Of course, the new AD will have no ties to Darrell but will have a boss who wanted him hired. I do think we have some talent and will be better, so it may be a mute point. If you are saying .500 overall, I think that might be do-able. No idea if .500 in conference is possible or not.

Chasse was hired at midterm because he was not an athletic director at the time. He was at UAMS. Maybe the chancellor wants to wait until spring to see what that does for applicant pool.

They would also be competing with DePaul and Northwestern for that talent just within their city, plus Loyola-Chicago and any major conference teams from outside Chicagoland.

Also keep in mind that Chicago State is a tiny school that is constantly under threat of shutting down entirely. Last I saw, they were getting less than 100 freshmen enrolling in a given fall.

From just a basketball perspective, they're pretty much just the worst. In the past ten seasons, they've had double-digit wins twice (topping out at 13). Over the past three seasons they've won a total of 12 games, over half of which were against non-D1 competition.

It would take a concerted effort to be worse off than Chicago State, and even then you'd probably fail.

Okay. You've convinced me. UALR is having enrollment problems, but nothing like that.

Chasse Conque steps down
Molly Castner, Chasse’s senior Women’s administrator at Little Rock has followed him to his new university in Texas. Wonder if anyone else will be going.

I think John Evans may also be going.
