Chapel Hill should worry about reliably winning against the national powers of Wake Forest and East Carolina before getting this far ahead of themselves.

RE: Mack Brown Proposes A New Playoff Format
My dream is 12 or 13. 10 conference champs and 2 or 3 at-larges.

Why not 16, you might ask?...I’m trying to keep the regular season more important. If 6 at-larges, then less emphasis to win your division in order to make it to your CCG. All 10 conference champs preserves importance for regular season. So 12 or 13 is actually better than 4, 6 and 8, imo.

8 probably won’t happen, tho. I cannot see the NY6 bowls, or even 2nd tier bowls going for it at all. But maybe 2nd tier bowls if they are involved as locations for playoff games. So my “dream” is more “fantasy” anyway. :(

An 8-team playoff, if done correctly---is more that adequate. If they end up doing the 5-1-2....I think that format will be around for ions without much change. That format does a really good job of dealing with most of the biggest issues and most importantly---fits into the time frame needed.

5-1-2 is still relying 100% on The CFP Committee to determine the G5 rep. Sure it’s better than what we have now, for the P5, but still very non inclusive. So, my dream or fantasy, or, my quest to have a satisfying playoff would be all 10 champs settling it out mono y mono (or is it Mano y Mano???) on the field. I would have loved to see Fresno’s defense vs UCFs offense (had they hypothetically met in a 12/13 team playoff).

There is an easy fix for this. G5's. End conference championship games and each conference selects a method for determining their champion. It could be via the final conference standings, the CFP poll or something else. Top 4 champs as determined by the CFP poll play each other on championship Saturday with the higher ranked teams hosting. Winners then play at a predetermined site that will host the "access bowl," or top ranked could host again. Winner goes to the CFP, loser gets a New Year's Day bowl. It gives college football fans two things. The first is meaningful football in December, the second is an unofficial G5 champ who then gets to prove it on the big stage.

Think about it, it would be must see TV for all football fans to watch Boise hoist UCF for the right to play Bama in the Cotton/Peach/Rose/Orange/Sugar Bowl. For the G5's, it only adds one additional game but that one additional game would be primetime tv. The likelyness of a G5 actually having the depth to survive an 8 team bracket to win the CFP is pretty slim. However, now and then much like a 15/2 game in basketball they will pull it off and slay a giant in the first round and it would be awesome. It certainly makes for better TV then watching Two SEC schools play Oklahoma and Clemson again.

So under your scenario not only would G5 conference championships not be determined on the field, but G5 teams would have to play an extra game. Eh...

Oh, and one lucky Go5 conference gets to give up its CCG for ... what's behind that fake veneer panel door, Johnny?

That's right! No Benefit Whatsoever!!

Here's the 5-1-2 method I like, if we have to have one, because it either (a) gives everyone a path or (b) puts a deserving top 8 G5 on equal footing with P5:

1) All five P5 champs are in CFP quarterfinals, plus two at-large teams ranked in top 8 and a G5 rep.

2) IF a G5 champ is ranked in the top 8, like UCF last year, no G5 playoffs, that team is the G5 representative and is in the CFP QFs. If two G5 teams manage to make the top 8, the second ranked team could also make the QFs as an at-large, if there is a slot available.

But assuming no G5 champ is in the top 8:

3) Keep the G5 title games because otherwise the champions are craptastic, exception if a conference plays a full round-robin schedule. All game at home of higher ranked team as determined by the CFP, with dates as an example.

December 10 ..... #5 G5 champ vs #4 G5 champ

December 17 ..... #1 G5 champ vs winner of G5/G4 ... #2 G5 champ vs #3 G5 champ

December 24 ...... G5 championship game ... winner to the CFP playoffs.

December 31 ..... CFP Quarterfinals

January 7 .......... CFP Semis

January 14 ........ CFP Final

Losers, season is over, they've played enough.
