Great, we get to see how we look in a man to man defense... Why not even have the option of throwing out a 2-3 zone???!!! Every player on that team knows how to run one, it's not some complex defense. This makes no sense to why he wouldn't at least want to see how we play in another defensive look after we were one of the worst defenses in the country last season. smh
That comment alone would lead me to believe either we look significantly better in M2M, OR, he hasn't learned. I'm going to hope it's the first option.
It is disconcerting though, with our lack of size, we need to be pressing too.
I would like to see them press also. If we are deep enough to do so. And, if we aren't that deep, I still we should be able to mix in the press at times.

I think we are on the same page here. Honestly, it's rare that good defensive teams don't switch things up a bit.

CB can't coach. We all know it. One of the least 'inspiring' leaders I've ever seen. Hope for everyone's sake I am wrong. But I'll bet dimes to donuts that I'm not. Why not give all the doubting fans that you know you have an indication of how this team is going to be different in the area of defense. #351
Apparently they have been working with 'hard hedge' as well as 'switching' screens in practice which is the same as last year.

I cringed when I heard that in the video as well. I've seen intramural teams easily figure out how to switch to a zone defense if necessary.
Hawking is right here. If there's not a significant progress shown on the defensive side of the ball we're in for another long season. Sigh.

Practices have been with a hard emphasis on defense. And we will be playing a 4 guard system most of the time. With consideration on who our opponents are.

This is an exhibition and I'm pretty sure that he wants to see how his guys can guard. It is about Jimmy's and Joe's too. Hawks have more overall quickness this year so that has to be figured in although Okauru may not be eligible this year. He looks like he can guard.
If you have a beef, that's fine, but please recommend a better approach or different approach for an exhibition with such little practice time to this point.

I think the “beef” we all have whether it’s been more overtly stated or in more subtle posts or conversation is that hard headed reliance on man to man. Over the last couple years we have heard many opinions of “a better approach” from almost all of our regular members here, and even some who only occasionally post in this forum.
Sure, he’s had limited practices so far with this group but more of the same is a serious head scratcher, especially in this case where it seems the least detrimental time to experiment.
Point being, we are entering year three under McGrath and the “we haven’t had much practice time so far to see if this man to man thing is gonna work” is nauseating. Granted, it took Wes Miller five years to see the light. So who knows.
I try to stay as optimistic as possible but the chances man to man won’t work at this point are far greater than they will based statistically on previous body of work. Why not at least use this opportunity to experiment a little. That’s all I’m wondering.

This is the point that makes it even more frustrating, he is supposedly close to Wes. I know if i saw what my buddy went through at a similar school i'd certainly used "lessons learned" from his experience. Maybe he will............(hopefully)

It takes minimal practice time to implement a 2-3 zone. It's great to see how we look in man to man, by why is that the only look exclusively. All those kids know how to play a 2-3, at least try it.

My only concern with 2/3 with this squad is lack of size. Rebounding is already hard out of a zone. But i agree, at least try it.

If you want enthusiasm, base it on the athleticism and skill of the guys coming in. Having 1 more big ready to roll would do it for me. And, that can simply be having Bowden eligible.

Bill- Regardless, if the coaching staff doesn't adapt to it's roster we will have the same results. They brought in some good kids, but the coaching is by far the biggest question.
