Might have a 17 game NFL regular season in 2021, and an extra playoff team in each conference as soon as the 2020 season. The NFLPA seems to be leaning toward a bargaining position of, "Everything has its price, and you can have your 17th game if you pay our price."

Interesting as player rep Richard Sherman basically said 17 games was a non-starter. I wonder if they expanded the rosters in order to implement the players will only play 16 games of a 18 game regular season.

sounded like the NFL gave several concessions that got them thinking about it...

I don't think it goes to 18 but 17... Probably with an extra bye during the season. playoffs would start on MLK weekend normally with tonight being the normal conference championship games. Super Bowl would become Presidents Day weekend.

I'm sure an extra bye week and increase in the split were definitely offered. It just didn't seem like it was enough. Unlike most, I think 17 is fine especially as the international game. Its definitely a better solution than putting an expansion team in Europe.

RE: 2019 NFL Thread
Wonder if the league has done enough groundwork to be ready for this by 2021. If every team's 17th game is a neutral site game played outside the USA, the league has to stage 16 international games in fall 2021, and that's not very far away considering the amount of advance planning required.

If instead they were to use some neutral sites here, then they'll create controversy because either some of the sites won't be truly neutral (e.g., Rams at the Rose Bowl, or Browns at Ohio State) or both teams will be so far away from the neutral site there might not be much point to it (e.g., Bills vs. Jaguars at the Rose Bowl).

RE: 2019 NFL Thread
The Jaguars are going to play two home games in London in 2020, but it's the fact near the bottom of the article that seems more important.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/f...ext-season
Quote:The Jacksonville Jaguars will play consecutive home games in London next season, potentially strengthening the franchise’s foothold in the UK. The Jaguars will play back-to-back games at Wembley to improve revenue during “a period of significant change within the league,” the Jaguars president, Mark Lamping, said on Tuesday. The dates and opponents are yet to be confirmed.

Quote:Jacksonville, who have failed to regularly fill their stadium over the past 20 years, more than double their single-game revenue from playing overseas. Jacksonville’s ticket, television, sponsorship and stadium revenue streams are smaller than those of NFL teams in larger markets.

Why is this franchise still in Jacksonville if they make twice as much money from every home game in London? Is it just the lack of other cities willing to throw as much money at a new stadium as Las Vegas did, or is there something else going on?

I don't recall what their strengths were when they got the nod with the Panthers but I think that long period of ineptitude after brunell and coughlin leaving the franchise killed their momentum.

Whatever the reasons Jacksonville got the franchise in the first place... the bolded part above and other data says that their financial situation is quite a bit worse than that of the three NFL teams that recently relocated. Maybe the owner's long term play is to keep on taking short term financial hits in the hope the NFL will eventually let him move to London full time.

Same situation as the Rays; a ridiculously long stadium lease that the city is obviously not interested in seeing bought out for any amount of money. It would take $1-2B for the city of Jacksonville to even listen as without the Jags the only major draw would be the Cocktail Party.

The Jags have 10 more seasons on their lease with Jacksonville. Maybe after 5, they start shaking down Jacksonville and other cities for a Vegas-sized subsidy, and by then they'll know if the NFL will permit a team to move to London full time.

Since Jacksonville will never host another Super Bowl, it won't be that much money to rebuild the Gator Bowl. The Jags move to London is going to have to wait until the lease expires.

NFL might have 7 playoff teams in each conference starting with the 2020 season.

I don't love it but expanding the NFL playoff won't hurt the product. I'm more interested in if the league will expand rosters and add bye weeks for the 17 game schedule.

think i heard going up from 53 to 55 man roster. Hopefully more active spots- not really exactly sure why everyone on the roster can't be active.
