The NFL I loved was Tecmo Super Bowl, NFL Street, NFL Primerime, sketchy TV feeds at sports bar, starter jackets, Logo Athletic hats, Boomer, Shake n Blake, Cowboys v 49ers, old school Super Bowl ads, and rules you could actually understand.

With the exception of most communities in the South and Oklahoma/Texas, and in places like Columbus, Ann Arbor and Happy Valley, college football is mostly followed by alums/students and family of a particular university. The NFL is followed by everyone-- man, woman, young, old, white collar, blue collar, etc.

UC FB needs to tap more into the demographic that falls outside of our norm. We need more t-shirt fans-- people that didn't go to college or maybe who attended NKU, Thomas Moore, Miami, Wright State, etc. Many of them already follow UC hoops.

Correct - schools that don't have D1 football programs.
Why not put adds in those student papers offering half priced tickets with a student ID?

The ad in the Xavier paper could say "Tired of seeing ugly college students? Go to a UC game!"

I was at the Jimmy John's in Norwood the other day and a group of the incoming freshman attending orientation were picking up a sandwich. Boy- that old saying still holds true.

RE: Helping Nippert Attendance
Someone compared attendance to lower level P5 schools earlier, but you really need to compare to other G5 schools. Are there any G5 schools that actually get the kind of attendance that everyone expects/hopes that Nippert should have? If there are, are any of those G5 schools (with good attendance) also in Pro sports towns? Maybe expectations are too high for the attendance of a G5 school in a Pro sports town?

My point is, IMHO, the conference affiliation is always going to hurt, until they get (back) into a (winnable) P5 conference. I know, I know. You are going to tell me that there are of plenty of schools in the P5 that don't have good attendance. And I agree with you. That is why I said "winnable" P5 conference. You have to admit that some of those lower P5 school fan bases have resigned themselves to the fact that they will never win their conference.

Very few people (in a Pro sports town), outside of hard core UC fans, get excited about winning a 2nd tier conference, going to a lousy bowl, and have no shot at the playoff. When they can otherwise pin their hopes on the local NFL team (who has had some recent moderate success). Knowing there's a good chance the coach will leave after 2-3 years if he has success, doesn't help either. That's the sentiment I get from most people that I talk to who are UC fans (and are not UC alums). They'll watch EVERY UC football game on TV, maybe even attend 1 or 2, buy and wear their UC gear proudly in public, but they won't be regular attendees or season ticket holders. (note: a lot of them do attend multiple UC basketball games)

BTW, I'm mainly talking about the "fringe" fan that people are hoping to attract.

Just my .02 cents.

For reference:

Best Attendance in the G5/Independent last year (* for schools in cities with pro sports)
Air Force 27,701
Army 31,693
Boise State 33,068
BYU 52,476
UC 30,519
Colorado State 29,504
East Carolina 32,908
Fresno State 31,503
Houston 29,838*
Memphis 30,178*
Navy 31,464*
San Diego State 31,439*
USF 38,517*
UCF 44,019

Taking BYU out of the equation for a minute, USF and UCF have us beat (San Diego State too but we are so close the difference is marginal). Obviously UCF does not have professional sports and they are riding the wave of not losing for 2 years. USF plays in a NFL stadium and has had a reputation of ** cough ** not be accurate in their attendance reporting.

Just for kicks here the P5 schools with the worst attendance last year (* pro towns)

Baylor 41,336
Boston College 37,623*
Cal 42,866
Duke 26,646
Georgia Tech 43,087*
Illinois 36,151
Indiana 40,965
Kansas 19,424
Maryland 33,594
Minnesota 37,915*
North Carolina 43,622
Northwestern 43,873*
Oregon State 35,209
Pitt 41,696*
Rutgers 37,799
Stanford 37,842*
Syracuse 37,043
TCU 42,868*
Vandy 28,045*
Virginia 39,705
Wake Forest 26,842
Washington State 30,091

RE: Helping Nippert Attendance
Really comes down to winning. If UC wins they will get attendance. That's how this market works. Reds literally have 10's of fans. Bungles start losing, PBS will be a graveyard by Nov.

I am shocked the ucla game is not sold out yet. However, I have seen no marketing outside of the emails they sent me as a season ticket holder.

^ Couple observations from my post above, obviously being in a pro-sports town weighs heavy in the P5 markets as well. Another observation I have is that most of those P5 schools listed are schools that are not winning at a half-way decent level.

Finally, with respects to what my expectations are for UC attendance right now as members of the AAC/G5--- we should be the class of the league.

I still love to tell the story of the time we visited Duke with my daughter. We heard hours straight of talk of the basketball team. While taking the tour, she mentioned she was interested in being in the marching band and wanted to know where the football stadium.

The tour guide not only was unsure if Duke had a marching band, but didn't know where the football stadium was. We never saw it during our visit. It turns out it is right behind the Cameron Indoor Stadium.

How, exactly, does Duke FB enhance the Duke AD? If Duke FB vanished tomorrow, how would the budget for the Duke AD change? Doesn't MBB do almost ALL the heavy lifting there?

I reckon the ACC football TV contract is pretty massive.

ACC Media Deal+CFP share+ACC Bowl Revenue. The other factor to consider elite private schools like Duke (WF and Vandy too) have a lot of rich alumni. Yes Duke BB is printing money, but there are a pool of rich guys giving millions in donations to Duke because they want to have a FB team playing at the highest level. The ticket money is just gravy to Duke.

I decided to go with the Flex Plan. I like the flexibility of it and going down for every home game was not an option this year.

I have (2) tickets to the UCLA game and will decide which others to go to later.

But they don't play at the highest level and haven't for decades...they are rarely ranked..they are often spanked by teams from lesser conferences.

So what do these donors think they are accomplishing?

Didn’t say they cared about winning— they want to continue rubbing elbows in all sports with UNC, WF, NC State and Virginia.

That’s all? Ok. I’m surprised everyone isn’t doing it.

You have to give the people a legit reason to show up other than "we think you ought to!"

You go through all these gyrations to arrange circumstances to pack Nippert stadium except for the one that will actually work....WIN.

I've seen people on this board try to wish all pro sports away...I've seen people on this board try to extort to P5 into letting UC in...I've seen people on this board try to construct outrageous scenarios of re-alignment that somehow winds up with UC in a P5 conference..

WTFU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Win your games...put the big boys on your schedule and defeat them.

Or admit that UC is middle of the pack and deserves middle of the pack attendance.

Does that seem clear enough?

Cincinnati's a pro sports town? Oh yeah, soccer. I forgot about soccer.

All you have to do to fix this is beat the big boys on their turf...your attendance will spike immediately.

That’s all? Ok. I’m surprised everyone isn’t doing it.

ehhh no I don't think it's that simple. Considering Ohio State seems to be having trouble with attendance, it takes more than just winning (yea they're trying to fill 102,000 seats compared to our 40,000). Their Rutgers game last year only drew 93k and they're issuing mini-plans for the first time in memorable history.

Even Bama saw a slight attendance decline in 2018. Saban was in the media last year, irate that Bama students weren't showing up for games.

That doesn't surprise me because a lot of schools schedule games against teams that have the appeal of dryer lint.

I'll wager the bulk of the drop in attendance was for the games against dogsh1t opponents. Games against legit rivals probably didn't drop off at all.....

Did O$U fail to sell out the last time they played Michigan?
Did Bama fail to sell out the last time they played Auburn?

I don't think so.

The big boys need to schedule more games against legit teams to keep the attendance numbers where they need to be.
