Since Brian Kelly coached his first game for uc in 2007 the Bearcats are a top 20 program in wins. The Bearcats have been an incredibly successful football program for more than a decade despite the tuberville blip.

RE: Helping Nippert Attendance
People go to the game to enjoy themselves. If they are having fun tailgaiting and would rather wait until kickoff or shortly thereafter to get there, then they will. Their job is to have fun, not to look good for the cameras, or inspire the team. Which is hard for die hard fans like us to realize.

Personally, I have found I enjoy watching the games on TV more than going in person, probably because living 2 hours away makes the event an all day commitment. I would rather do other things, then enjoy the game, then do other stuff.

What amazes me is for many it seems the game is secondary to getting wasted and over eating. Friends from other colleges who we have hosted are always shocked by the late arriving crowd.

If the beer drinking and brat eating is the goal, why come to any game, just invite friends for picnics.

Outside of hardcore fans college football is a social event. College basketball is exact opposite. The only people there are hardcore fans and students. Casuals watch the tournament because it’s the only time college basketball matters to most sports fans.

The big difference between UC football and most power conference teams is that they have more hardcore fans.

I think the fans should be there inspire the team. That's what a home field advantage is... at least in college sports.

Pro sports are more about the experience. I've never been, but I've heard several times that Wrigley field is a fun place to go but the real fans complain that virtually no one is there to watch the game.

I think college sports crowds should be into the game. Having known a few players in my day, behind closed doors they all have said that they were at times intimidated by other teams' crowds.

This is pretty clueless. Go to an sec game where the tailgate last two or three days.

I have been to SEC game and I still feel it is stupid.

I go to see a football game the rest is tangential.

I understand others often go and do not even have tickets. To each his own.

RE: Helping Nippert Attendance
you guys are describing what i believe to be growing pains for the program.

right now we sorta have to be happy with people just showing up when they do. once we grow to the point of regular sellouts, ticket prices will go up a lot and primarily only hardcore fans will pay to attend. at that point casual fans wont be able to go as often, and when its a more rare event thats costing them a lot of money they'll want to get their moneys worth and see the whole game. at that point with regular packed houses the opening kickoff will be one of the most exciting parts (as it is already for hardcore fans but when the stadium is rocking it will be for casual fans too).

with generation overturn you'll see more hardcore fans. people are finally starting to grow up watching the bearcats as a bigtime program. kids born during the beginning of the big east era are just now teens. for reference sake, im mid 30s and my first couple years at uc my friends couldnt even understand going to uc games, even for free. i had to convince them to go on weeks when their team (ND, osu, pennst, etc) werent in direct conflict on tv. wasnt until the '06 rutgers game that anybody on campus cared. now that those same people have careers and families established, football games are suddenly a family event.

By this logic, I assume that you have never been to Octoberfest. Just go have a picnic.

Then I don't understand what this thread is complaining about. Unless it's the fact that they need more marquee wins to boost attendance.

Beat top 10 teams on their turf and all these complaints should vanish.

It's ridiculous to keep hoping that all pro sports will abandon the city to boost UC FB attendance.

Actually I have been to Octoberfest in Zinzinnati and in Munich.

The one thing I disliked about the real one is all the smoking in the beer tents.

When I go to Octoberfest I go for the fest when I go to a football game the game is primary.

Here we go again with Seatgate. And sounds like Notchgate is coming soon.

And the latest is Tailgate...which people will never leave early until this team achieves a major bowl win. Minor league sport in a major league city. Please stop comparing UC to teams from Lexington, Morgantown, or Louisville. And by the way those schools are actually in the P5.

If we want to be in the P5, and we think we are P5 quality, then we have to compare to other P5 and act like P5. Plenty of other programs in pro markets that draw well.

Also: Louisville is half the size of Cincinnati.

As far as Seatgate goes, it’s not all that complicated. Just look at sellout figures pre reno vs. post. Observe what 34,000 looks like when soccer does the counting, and know that the new addition didn’t add more than 2,500 seats (if that) and little SRO. It’s common sense. My guess is around 36,000. Some say 38,000. After soccer seat elimination, FCC says 33,500. Whatever.

Really? I can think of only a very few. Please enumerate them.

Let's see...

USF - no
Houston - about like us
SMU - hail no
BC - draw "well" ? ... maybe
USC, UCLA - perhaps, but they only recently joined the club again
Pitt - not if you're going to count living, breathing human beings
Miami - the Dolphins don't even draw there
Washington - OK
Temple - LOL
Minnesota - if they're decent, but not regularly

Am I forgetting anyone? I didn't include the proximity cases like Stanford, Arizona St., Colorado, etc.

Why would you not include proximity cases? Ann Arbor is fairly small - you don’t think they draw significantly from the millions in a Detroit less than an hour away?

Ever been to Manhattan, Kansas? I have. It’s small. They draw from nearby Kansas City and compete with their pro teams.

Miami Fl drew 61k per game last year.

IU draws 40k and sits a short drive from Indy.

Purdue draws 50k per game and competes with both Indy and Chicago.

TCU drew 42k per game last year.

UCLA and USC drew over 50k in 2018, and LA is loaded with competition.

Northwestern drew 44k per game in Chicago.

Tempe is 11 miles from Phoenix. Why wouldn’t you include them? ASU drew 59k.

The 49ers play in Santa Clara, not far from Palo Alto. Stanford only drew 38k, but that’s about a quarter better than UC.

Cal Berkley drew 43k.

GA Tech, 43k.

Washington, 69k.

Well, the first thing is that you have to draw the line somewhere.

The next thing I notice in your argument is that you apparently consider the whole state of Indiana as a "pro market". That's not accurate.

And all these 40K range programs aren't that much better than ours. They would hardly meet the "needle mover" standard that most hold as consideration as a good attendance program.

I've been to games at visiting fields in just about every major conference. The difference here is a lot of the "casual" fans start way to late as compared to bigger more established programs. Folks at those schools realize they have to start much earlier and navigate the crowds , traffic, etc. at games. It's not real complicated, but in these days common sense is a fleeting trait. Most folks can't live without their phone let alone plan ahead. You have to wait for concessions, bathrooms et. al at all these places. If you wait till halftime, good luck anywhere on Saturday afternoon.

Couple points:

1. iU, Purdue, Northwester play in the B10. Their fans get to see the likes of tOSU, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin every other year.
2. Those schools travel very well. Wife is OSU grad- went to game in Bloomington about 10 years with friends of ours who are IU alums. If I were a betting man my guess would be half the people in the stadium were OSU fans. That happens at Northwestern and Purdue also.

1. iU, Purdue, Northwester play in the B10.

When I was in school in Chicago, I lived right across from Ryan Field...the second point is actually an understatement. The OSU-Northwestern game was probably 80% red in the stands, and the same happens with Wisconsin and Michigan.

Actually I have been to Octoberfest in Zinzinnati and in Munich.

The one thing I disliked about the real one is all the smoking in the beer tents.

When I go to Octoberfest I go for the fest when I go to a football game the game is primary.

Skip the both of those and go to the good Oktoberfest in Minster, Ohio this year. Same weekend as the Friday night UCF game.
