Purple Raider Open Results

125 - @JakeFerri 3rd
133 - @BrendonFenton_ 1st
141 - @Blake_Earl 5th
184 - @joe_andrassy 5th
197 - Ryan Boyle 3rd

Ferri will be the starter @ 125lbs and Brendon Fenton (transfer from Pitt, who wrestled for Elyria High School) will be the starter @ 133lbs next season. Mutschler @ 141lbs, Komara @ 149lbs, Chrisman @ 157lbs, Limongi @ 165lbs?, McNally @ 174lbs, 184lbs?, McCracken @ 197lbs, & HWT will be TBD as I think they are bringing in 2 in this recruiting class.

Definitely need to find a good 165lbs & 184lbs.

Gould hasn’t wrestled much and he had a strong high school pedigree. I wonder what’s going on with him. Fenton is a huge addition. He was a stud in high school - 2x state champ and 4x finalist. I saw him wrestle a couple of times at Pitt last year (yes, I’ve been cheating on KSU, but Pitt has a great thing going right now plus there’s Pens games) and he didn’t seem 100%. Hopefully the change will do him good. Coach Mitcheff had to be the key in getting him here. Elyria connection.

Solid win for the Flashes and a big win for Rooney over a better ranked opponent. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see it because the ESPN+ app wouldn’t let me log in for over 30 minutes.

It was nice to win 6 of 10. It’s been awhile since we did that against solid competition.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Wrestling lost to Cleveland St. tonight by a score of 16-15. Coach cost us a team point by running on the mat to protest a call. The ref gave CSU a pin after the period ended because he couldn’t hear anything due to the crowd. He changed his call but the damage was done. Coach lost his cool on that one.

Also Rooney lost 4-3 by giving up a takedown within the last 5 seconds. The team just can’t buy a break.

What the hell did I just watch? Awful, awful, awful. Rooney didn’t lose to a fish, but that loss will hopefully remind him to wrestle 7 minutes. Coach A lost his mind. The ref missed the call but that’s why you have the challenge brick. There was no need to lose his cool with video replay. That was just dumb. I wonder who would have won the dual on criteria if it had ended in a tie.

I know we got the first takedown!!! Don’t get me started on that one again.

Here’s my problem with the whole “failure to control mat area” rule: its stupid and inconsistently enforced. If you get a referee like Intagliata (last night) or Jim Rivello (from Conels first match with OSU in Cleveland) who doesn’t like Andrassy and holds a grudge, you’re screwed.

You watch a match with Smith from Okie State or Brands from Iowa and you tell me they never fail to control the mat area. Give me a break. And because they are who they are, they’ve never once been called for that.

Saint Brands would never do such a thing...he will never be called for it and will eventually collide with or tackle a ref or opposing wrestler. That’s the only way he would ever lose his job at Iowa. And even then, it would be a debate.

I agree with all this but winning brings about sainthood. That’s just the way it works. I believe Nick Saban has reached that status. The fact is Coach charged at the referee and for a brief second I thought he was going to tackle the ref. He lost it. It did not have to happen. Having said that it’s far from the worst thing that’s happened to the wrestling team in the last year.

I am curious. Why would Rivello and Intagliata hold a grudge against Andrassy?

MAC tournament next Saturday and Sunday at NIU. There are now 15 teams in the MAC and we have only 2 wrestlers in the top 6. Rooney at 133 and McNally (who is at Kent only because EMU dropped their program) at 174. Both have a decent chance of moving on to the national tournament. We will see.

I was surprised that McCracken @ 197lbs wasn't seeded in top 6 as he has beaten the guy from CSU a few times this season as well as the #5 seed.

Komara & Mast might be able to score some points/make some noise.

A full 3 weeks off from competition, which I think is the most I can remember in many years. I think it is has been 1.5 - 2 weeks off between last match and the MAC Championship.

Coach Andrassy mentioned that they have 4 wrestlers committed and are closing in a very good HWT. This year's senior class, save for Rooney, underperformed and all of their replacements next year are better wrestlers/highly skilled.

Not a great first round. Rooney and Gutierrez won. McNally received a bye. All others lost. After round 1 we are 15th and last.

Better second round. 2-1 in championship bracket with McNally and Rooney getting to the semis. Went 3-4 in consolations. We are now tied for 8th.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Final update today. Rooney and McNally won and will be wrestling in the finals tomorrow. Went 1-4 in consolation matches so only McCracken is still alive and will finish somewhere between 3rd and 8th depending how he does tomorrow. Team is 8th out of 15 teams.

At least we’re a better tournament team than we are in dual competition. I’m really surprised by OU’s performance and CSU is doing better than I thought they would. Even in a down year, Mizzou has a decent lead on CMU. Overall, the MAC isn’t very impressive this season...

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
At the risk of jinxing us, which I seem to do more so lately, Rooney and McNally SHOULD take firsts. Rooney has Hart who he beat earlier in the year, while the #1 and #2 seeds are out of the picture at #174. McNally took out #2 to reach the finals. McCracken is still alive for 3rd. He has a CSU wrestler who he should beat in order to set up a rematch against CMU, who he lost to in the regular season on a last second TD. With those 2 wins, he’d wrestle for 3rd and can earn some points for the team in the process. We don’t have any depth but these three have done a good job this season. Hopefully, they can finish strong.
