I live in Austin Texas now. Can't really go to any Georgia Southern games unless they play Texas state in Texas. You are only an hour and a half away. Make the trip and it will be worth it.

I'm torn though. Should I go to Troy (1.25 hour drive up from Dothan), or stay home and watch 8 to 10 more games? SunBeltBBS, what should I do??

“College football fan’s dilemma?” Not even close. That is blasphemous, kind sir, to say you are debating sitting on your butt at home, rather than a short drive to watch the season opener. This is an example of what a real dilemma would be: My son is getting married on opening day and I’m not sure if I should go to the game or the wedding.

Yea....that’s your sons fault, outcast him from the family with shame for his foolish mistakes and go to the game.

For me, it would depend on who my son is marrying. If I like the girl, then yes, I will go to the wedding. If I don't like her, I would encourage my son to go the justice of the peace route.

The good thing about opening weekend is there are games Thursday through Monday. Also you live fairly close, so you can still catch some other games Saturday as well.

Definitely make the opener if at all possible. I'm heading up to Boone (3 hour drive) to see us play East Tennessee State. App is honoring Coach Jerry Moore for his 24 years of service!! I'll catch other games as I am able. Like 97 App said, this is opening weekend, not just opening day. Games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day Monday!!!!!!04-cheers

This.

1.6% of the year you get to tailgate at home for a football game.

After 23 years of marriage, my wife still hasn't figured this out yet. She always tries to plan things during the fall and can't understand why I tell her to have fun, but I'll be in Statesboro. 04-cheers

To me it's not a dilemma. If I can make it to The Boro, I'm in The Boro! No other games are more important to watch than our own.

A buddy of mine wasn't paying attention and his then fiancé scheduled their wedding for the same day as the I-AA National Championship in '89. You know... the one that was the end of the first 15-0 perfect season, and Erk's last game before retiring, and oh did I forget to mention that it was at home in Statesboro (back when they would move it around every couple years).... he and all of his groomsmen are all GS grads. They listened to as much of the game on the radio as they could from two hours away. They were all pissed, as they should have been!

Thanks guys. Made my decision easy. Just bought five tickets for $10 a piece during the flash sale today. Roped some buddies of mine into going. HemiMan, I will stop by for a bit and say hello.

Get a motel room in Troy, watch football before you leave for VMS, and watch the rest of the games after you return to your room. Simple as that.

My wife goes to a good bit of the games so we usually don’t have any scheduling issues in the Fall. My youngest daughter is a pretty hardcore sports fan as well, so we have a lot of fun with it.

Come on by. We will have the TV going, drinks will be flowing, meat will be on the grill, and some BS will fill the air.

I'm honestly more of an NFL fan as a whole. I've been a Cowboys fan my whole life and can get into pretty much any NFL game. I didn't really get into CFB until TXST went FBS my senior year, before that I just couldn't really get behind what is definitely the most unfair and most exploitative sport in the world. But now Ive seen the light and gotten over all of that and my TXST fandom is equal to my Cowboys fandom. Gonna be pretty awesome when they share a game night on the 29th. I can't wait to go to my favorite sports bar and watch them both at the same time.

I have 2 small kids now and it is extremely difficult for me to make it to multiple games each year, so I am somewhat forced to stay home and watch the games on TV, along with all the other games. But, those few times I make it are amazing and make me wish I could go more. So I don't know if that helps you out or not, but that's where I am.

There is nothing more important than being in the stands supporting your team whenever possible. And the reasons why are endless.

RE: A College Football Fan's Dilemma...
I understand the draw that watching TV at home has. When I'm not at the Southern game, I generally enter the man cave just before noon with my printed out TV schedules that are marked with which team we need to lose to help move the Eagles up the charts, etc. I get about 12 games going on at once, that's nice to be able to just glance around the room and see what's going on around the Nation. Fully stocked cooler, Southern Comfort close by.... I usually exit about midnight, or fall asleep watching Hawaii or Boise St.

But I haven't missed a home game in nearly 20 years. You cannot help your team from home. You cannot be the 12th man at home.
Fans truly have an effect on a team's performance. I'd go to the game and get loud when you have to and get quite when you need to.

With technology today, you really can take games with you. Either plan for it, or crash a tailgate with TV's. Most tailgates I've been to are glad to welcome fellow fans or even visiting fans. Go man, go be with about twenty odd thousand "of your closest friends"
It's college game day baby, don't just be a spectator, be part of it! Hear the drums of the marching band, feel that thump with your own ears, let it vibrate across your soul!
Check out those cheerleaders!
Smell the grills! It's the pageantry of college football, on opening day.. When your team's record (all of our teams) is still perfect and the stories & legends of this new, fresh season have yet to be written. LIVE it while you still can.

Or just stay home, its really up to you. 03-wink

Opening day is on my birthday this year. I was originally going to try to make it to the LSU game and spend my birthday weekend in New Orleans/Baton Rouge but plans changed, so instead a group of friends and I will be bouncing from bar to bar in downtown Savannah watching football and drinking good drinks. All I want for my birthday is an Eagles win.

The Alley Cat lounge is a great cocktail bar. Its a basement bar just west of telfair square in the alley behind First Chatham Bank

I am a bad fan this year and booked a European vacation during the first three games. I don't feel as bad that A&M got moved to Thursday and would be annoying to go to now. Good omen that we upset A&M or SMU though since I decided to skip them. This is how we beat UH in 2012 when I went to Colorado for vacation instead.
