All of the potential growth in college football is in the g5 ranks, the A5 is now losing attendance and this looks like a trend for the A5 while the g5 is striving to trend up

Houston will be stuck with the new AAC media deal for 12 years. What looks good right now will be viewed as chicken feed compared to the P5 schools in the not too distant future.
Did you not see where I said “ all of the potential growth in college football is in the g5 ranks”, did you not see that , of course this is my opinion but if true then all kinds of good things can happen for the g5

To be sure, I don't think it has anything to do with the State of Illinois specifically. The exact same local political and alumni pressure exists everywhere (see UAB football).

Ultimately, everyone involved is a human being. The number of university presidents and trustees that want to be etched in history as having killed a football program or an entire athletic department is close to zero. When you add in publicity-seeking politicians and passionate alumni, it's simply something that goes far, far, far beyond the financial numbers.

Crazy if you say something enough people start to believe it.

Iowa State is a power school.

RE: Where will the g5 be in 2026
Hopefully by 2025 the g5 will be up to 96 teams if the a5 goes to an A4 with 32 teams
These 96 teams will all be looking to make money anyway they can, some will be holding onto the A6 thing but this group will be a very small and insignificant group because by 2025 every school not in the A4 will know that the A6 or any A4 invites are now clearly not happening
So who are these 96 schools ?, well it’s the 64 g5 schools plus the 32 a5 rejects

Who are these 32 rejects, it’s a good question because some of these schools might have some real value and enough TV value to jump start a new FBS league with the current g5 schools
I mean who knows, some media groups might pay some real coin for this new league, i for one sure hope so becouse the big college football split has already happened

Close to zero but greater than zero. There have been a few niche types willing to pull plugs

The added political issues going with an HBCU complicate the Chicago State situation even more.

If Chicago State were my sports consulting client we would be sitting down and having some really in-depth discussions regarding the merits of Division II and NAIA membership.

If the enrollment hadn't imploded I would be encouraging Division II but given the enrollment situation, NAIA is probably the better option.

It is much easier to deal with NAIA compliance than NCAA, so some savings there.

Have to think that if the Chicagoland Conference is willing to go to 15 with Indiana University Northwest (in Gary) breaking from their private tenor that Chicago State might be able to join.

In 2026 4 of: BYU, UCF, USF, Houston, Cincy, and Memphis will be in the Big 12

The AAC will have 10 schools for football, replacements coming from C-USA

C-USA will have 12 members, replacements coming from SBC/FCS

If the SBC loses any schools to C-USA they will replace from FCS

MAC and MWC will be exactly as they are

Look down on a small town in Iowa if it makes you feel good, I guess, but Iowa State has sold over 43,000 football season tickets for 2019. Bowl games prefer Iowa State to teams in their own conference with better records because Iowa State fans buy bowl game tickets. Sometimes being the biggest deal in the area is better than being one of dozens of options in a large metropolis.

Bowl committees LOVE Iowa State.

Cyclones are slated to come to AState week two in 2025 curious to see how many they bring.

You realize Iowa State has a 43k season ticket base that’s triple the size of USC’s, right?

Iowa State fan does bring it. They have great attendance in football, basketball and even the Olympic sports (their WBB averages over 9,500 a game). One of those benefits of being in a state where there is nothing else going on. Their TV ratings are even pretty decent, as evident by this article.

No doubt that the support for ISU from Ames (and the state) is strong, and I agree with you that "sometimes being the biggest deal in the area is better than being one of dozens of options in a large metropolis."

Having said that — and with absolutely no reason to be anti-ISU — ponder this: My brother (who extensively traveled Iowa and its many cities/towns during a previous job; he likes Ames) attended a Big Ten school in a college town similar to Ames. The Big Ten town is charming (I've been many times) and has its positives.

But there are lot of folks who have basically zero interest in sports. And a town like Ames or the Big Ten town in which my brother went to school ... for contrast, Asheville, North Carolina, is like Paris compared to Ames, according to my brother and many folks I've talked to who have visited both Asheville and Ames. (True, UNC-Asheville is like a high school compared to ISU in terms of sports.). And a major city compared to Ames ... well, there is no comparison (in fairness, I've never been to Ames and might love it). So it works both ways. But for people who are not into sports, Asheville (and, again, I'm simply using that city as an example) or Ames ...? The choice is easy.

Again, I understand your point that Iowa State does well with fan support. And we should all respect that. But when a college town basically has very few other cultural/civic educational/entertainment options ... you tend to see strong fans support. This is not necessarily a bad thing and clearly not something to mock or trivialize. But ...

Maybe I'm over-simplfying but I wanted to weigh in.

RE: Where will the g5 be in 2026
The G5 will slide further away from the P5 .
The only reason the Big 12 would expand is to add markets for a network.
My guess that becomes less necessary as time goes on they stay at ten.
Championship game was a reason now that is gone.
Round robin basketball and football schedules are valuable to have.
All the P5 are going to nine game conference schedules.
Almost no P5 at G5 will be happening in the future.
That twelfth game after eleven P5 will be a home game vs G5 or FCS.
Getting two buy games will be rare for a G5.

I could see a G6 or G7 with schools still trying to elevate their programs.
Probably in a more cost effective way like the MAC.
Eight members in a cost effective conference for travel and football only to fill it out hybrid conferences.
The top of the G5 will suffer the most because they have invested so heavily.
Watching the Sun Belt the last three call up did not gain in attendance.
Both CCU and Georgia Southern have expanded their stadiums.
They did not overspend or build all new stadiums though.
The Colorado St type of investment will never pay off its P5 or bust.

Yes, anyone familiar with academe knows that elite Egos, the egos of top administrators, donors, and politicians, the people who actually influence big decisions about colleges - plays a huge role in creating and perpetuating money losing athletic programs.

These programs are regarded as badges of prestige and bragging rights, and the primary currency among elites is prestige. Even money is valuable mostly because it is a path to prestige. Of course it is the lower ranks such as students that are expected to pay for it.

I prefer Houston to stay in the AAC
All of the potential growth in college football is in the g5 ranks, the A5 is now losing attendance and this looks like a trend for the A5 while the g5 is striving to trend up

Houston would sell its soul to get into a P5, and you know it.
