I haven't even mentioned the secondary yet. A lot of production coming back. This is probably the most stout USM defense we've had in a looooong time, especially considering the amount of overall defensive production we have returning from the T10 defense we had last year. I think we're gonna be a nightmare for a lot of offenses this year. TTT...

You lost to us last year. A limped dick travesty of an offense. Is returning production really a good thing?

OC is gone. OL coach is gone. S/C coord. is gone and THANK GOD Hopson made these right moves.
Our "office" will be greatly improved. Players are also breaking personal best S/C records this off season. Congrats on beating us last year 20-17. I presume Charlotte will be having a banner reveal for it this year?

Damn I hope so. Don't most individual players get stronger from one year to the next?

‘It’s a huge difference.’ Southern Miss football undergoes physical transformation
https://www.sunherald.com/sports/college...WnhhigOO7o
Quote:“We had eight guys last year do about 500 on the squat,” USM redshirt junior linebacker Jacques Turner said. “This year, over 30 guys are over 500 on the squat. It’s a huge difference. You’re going to notice that on the field this season.”
Players wrapped up summer workouts this week by maxing out on lifts and the squat wasn’t the only area where more players saw improvements.
“We had eight or nine guys dead-lift over 400 last year. It was 40 this year,” Abraham said. “Our strength is definitely improving. Our guys look rocked up and that’s definitely going to be important.”
After being hired at Charlotte in July of 2012, Durning was there at every step as the 49ers built their football program. While the 49ers have yet to put together a winning season since their first campaign as an FBS program in 2015, they have always featured one of the more physical teams in Conference USA.
When Charlotte head coach Brad Lambert was replaced by former Austin Peay head coach Will Healy after the 2018 season, USM head coach Jay Hopson scooped up the free agent strength and conditioning coach.

You still don't have the "Clark system", so your players will be inferior. :)

If we can get avg QB play, we wont lose a conference game. Above avg QB play and we only lose to Alabama.

Yes, that is the "Clark system". It is when the clark stops on your playing eligibility for a couple of years.

Does USM run a 4-3 or 3-4?

Negative. We've got a HC that is making the necessary changes that will get us a championship...Hopson is doing the same thing that Fedora did after year 3: realizing who your coaching weak links are and rectifying them.
Hopson dismisses offensive line and strength coach
https://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/stor...483310002/
What Hopson and Fedora have done during their first 3 years is very similar...but coaching philosophies were reversed. Fedora was offensive minded...during his first 3 years we had so many high scoring games that we lost (48-47, 57-50, 38-35, 50-49 type games). So Fedora fires his defensive coordinator and hires a competent one and what do you know? We go 12-2, win the CUSA championship, and finish t20 ranking. Fast forward to 2019, Hopson is going into his 4th season...has really good defense but offense leaves a lot to be desired. Tons of low scoring tough losses 21-20, 20-17, 26-23, 24-17...so what does Hop do? He fires his o-line coach, strength coach and "urges" his OC (and good friend) to take another position at another school because they both see the writing on the wall. I've been screaming it all offseason...Southern Miss has made the perfect changes to put them in a position to win 10+ games this year, a CUSA 'ship, t25 ranking etc...and that's what will happen this year.
It's ironic, because after Fedora's 3rd year, people said the same thing after he fired Todd Bradford (DC)..."but, you guys fired the wrong coach, Fedora isn't the answer, he doesn't care about the other side of the ball, he isn't a complete coach etc."....of course we all know how that turned out. I actually predict that after Hopson wins CUSA this year that he'll get poached by a school who can pay him 4-5 times the amount he's making at USM...like Maryland, Indiana, Arizona, Colorado, Ole Miss, Arkansas...

Nobody, and I mean nobody was saying that about Bra_for_. Most wanted him gone after year one. People didn't like Fedora because he was too "flashy," wore hair product, ladies around town thought he was easy on the eyes and above all...immediately followed JB and just kept right on winning.
I wish Hopson the best if he gets an opportunity to move on after this year. I'd gladly take Fedora back

Yes, people were very vocal about wanting Bradford gone. They were also very vocal about wanting FEDORA gone.
I think you're missing my point which is this: I remember MANY people saying over and over after his 3rd year that Fedora was not the answer because he doesn't have the balls to fire his friends/weak links of his staff (Bradford) for the betterment of the program..."Fedora can't win CUSA", "Fedora doesn't care about defense", "we need to fire Fedora", "we need to bring Bower back". etc. So many people were pushing this towards the end of his 3rd season (2010). Remember, at that time in 2010 we just finished w/ another measly 5-3 conference record with a 44-43 loss at home to ECU, a 50-49 OT loss at home to UAB, a 56-50 loss @ Tulsa, and a 31-28 loss to Louisville in the Beef 'o Brady Bowl after leading in that game 14-0 in the first half. Just like the heat Fedora was getting at the end of his 3rd year, Hopson is feeling the heat at the end of his 3rd year and just like Fedora did, Hopson has made the necessary staff changes...which is why I predict (just like Fedora did) Hopson will coach us to a 10+ win season, CUSA championship, t25 ranking, and he'll probably get swooped up by a P5 school.

This info comes from Goldeneaglepride.com DT/DE De’Michael Chester is no longer with the program. Had his scholarship pulled to make room for transfers. Grad Transfer on campus this summer. DE Torrence Brown Penn State, 6’5’ 255 R-Sr. Small HBU All-American DE Terry Whittington 6’5’ 240 transferred in to Southern Miss July 7th. He was at Alcorn State last season where he had 9 sacks. He has gotten NFL attention. Wanted to prove his worth at another level. Whittington knows Hopson and CO-DC Derek Nicholson well as they recruited him back in 2015 while at Alcorn. The USM Dline should be stout up the middle an offer more pash rush options off of the edge this season.
