2019-20 Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules
Gonna start this so the recruiting thread doesn't get cluttered up. Supposedly a big name coming to Rice on November 9. All of the following teams have games or aren't playing on that day: Purdue, Georgetown, Texas, Auburn, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, TCU, LSU, Kentucky, Virginia, Wisconsin, Duke, Michigan, UCLA, UNC, Kansas, Florida, Northwestern* (released today), Texas A&M* (released today).

Teams unaccounted for: Houston, VCU, Florida State, Louisville, Syracuse, Baylor, Arizona, Villanova, Oregon, Tennessee, USC, Indiana, Gonzaga.

*I'll keep editing this until the big reveal.

Ouch - Illinois not considered worthy of inclusion with the "big names." 03-wink I guess that's what happens you lose 40 games in 2 years and haven't made the tournament since 2013. They are (inexplicably) preseason #20 per Andy Katz, though. Haven't released their schedule yet, either...

FWIW, my money is on an Ivy or other academic peer (QMB returns to Rice with Vandy? although he wouldn't be eligible). Rice's idea of a "big name" may not necessarily mean "in basketball" (unless you are hearing otherwise).

I’ll guess UH. It’s been a few years since anyone with a pulse came to Tudor.

Would be great if we convinced a big name team to play us at Tudor. Of the ones listed, I'd say Louisville, Syracuse, 'Nova, or Gonzaga would be the best outcomes.

Some additional names crossed off the list: Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Syracuse, Baylor, Oregon, Maryland, Harvard, Yale.

That leaves roughly: Houston, VCU, NC State, Arizona, Villanova, Xavier, USC, Tennessee, Indiana, Ohio State, Gonzaga, + other smaller name power conference schools.

I should ask for a discount on my season ticket for that.

NAIA. I really don't understand.

I can see UST (which is now Div III but was NAIA). Right down the road, etc. But why attach a boat anchor to RPI and SOS to play a school hundreds of miles away?

We played Wayland and Texas Lutheran and the like for years. This is par for the course.

...in putt-putt golf.

I know that, as in football, we don't have the pull to build a dream schedule, but NAIA?

The winningest women's basketball program in the NCAA. They started giving basketball scholarships to women in the 1950s, long before Title IX, and dominated the women's collegiate game for a while. The Flying Queens have won 19 national championships and have won over 1600 games.

Don't know much about the men, but the women have a pretty good history. Our men played their men, sometime during the pathetic Bob Polk era, IIRC, and the comment was, "Thank God we aren't playing their women."

Come to think of it, if the Wayland game is Nov 10th, then it's not likely there's a game Nov. 9.

I thought of that, but if we're putting together a tournament with NAIA teams, that's not very exciting. If it's some sort of charity event with celebrity or NBA ties, that would be interesting, but it's awfully late to begin publicizing it.

RE: 2019-20 Men's and Women's Basketball Schedules
And...it's Penn. Which is disappointing (maybe an understatement), but I guess unsurprising considering how hard it is to get a good team to play on the road these days. And I mean, just in general, it's a bad schedule. Again. The biggest game of the year is Houston at Tudor and we scheduled it for a Tuesday. That should be the big event of the fall and should be on a Saturday night. Two regular season non-D1 opponents. Houston Baptist, Lamar, and Northwestern State again. Only other good game is against an Arkansas squad that's going to be decidedly average.

Just to put a bow on this, because I'm sure I've beaten it to death over the past couple of years, but very few people are going to come to a game against Wayland, HBU, St. Thomas, or Sam Houston. We've gotta do a better job getting compelling schools down to South Main.
