DE Michael Kennedy
“Michael Kennedy is a guy that brings some speed to the edge. I think he brings some of the same qualities as Sutton Smith”. - Coach Hammock
Interesting comment for sure. We could use some speed off the edge with those monster defensive tackles coming up the middle. Something to look at in camp.

RE: DE Michael Kennedy
With all due respect to Mr. Kennedy and Coach Hammock, Sutton Smith is/was a freak and his accomplishments at NIU will not be replicated in a long time, if ever.
Also, Coach Hammock was not around to see Sutton Smith as a player/leader firsthand.
That's really an unfair comparison.
Kennedy doesn't need to be Sutton Smith, he just needs to be Micheal Kennedy. And hopefully that turns out to be pretty damn good.

The odds of Kennedy approaching Sutton’s production are almost nil. But I get the comparison. Exact same size. Former RB. It’s inevitable. Hammock did just say “some” of the skill Sutton brought and referenced speed. If he’s half as good it’s a huge win.

RE: DE Michael Kennedy
He must be looking good. Why would a coach throw a player under the bus by raising him up to a very high standard only to know/see him fail?
I like the Teddy Roosevelt line "walk softly and carry a big stick"

Agree, but I still think it's an unnecessary comparison. If the similarities are there, NIU fans will make the connection.
A more apt comparison at the DE position, I think, is Lorbeck to Corcoran. Lorbeck stepped up when he had to last season with minimal drop off many times. Add a year of experience and continued conditioning (I do think Lorbeck played well early when substituted but faded a bit as playing time increased, hopefully this was just conditioning) and I expect to see little drop off by season's end from that position.

Sutton Smith was a great player for us and I loved watching him play. He was at his best and most effective when Corcoan was on the field with him.

RE: DE Michael Kennedy
The rest of the D-line will have to be better to come even close to the effect that SS had. Hopefully the LBs can be even better than last year, but you need lots of pressure from the front four anyway.

So NIU fans should be the one making observations and connections on the players and not the coach????
