Agree. Seems like Coach Hammock has created a buzz, in-state school should help boost attendance.

First game of the year against an in state school. It’s going to be a packed house. I’m looking forward to the ISU Sucks chants 02-13-banana ( also ISU will travel well. Don’t let there be more ISU fans in there than Huskies!!!!)

I like this. I would start with a number more like 17,500 though.

After not being able to fill up the stadium for a Top 25 team in Utah on a beautiful Sept evening last year, I remain leery on attendance.

I hope to see 20K, but keep in mind it's Labor Day weekend and the majority of the students will probably be heading home.

Utah was #26 in the AP heading into their game with NIU. #24 in Sagarin and #14 in S&P.

RE: Opener attendance predictions ??? Just for fun
According to this report
https://fbschedules.com/college-football...s-in-2018/
Northern ranked pretty dismally in home attendance compared to stadium capacity last year, out of the 130 FBS teams.

"121. NORTHERN ILLINOIS (8-6) – 43.3% (Huskie Stadium holds 24,000)."

The story uses Phil Steele's preseason magazine stats, but the article author adds a graph of interest to us, singling out NIU for comment:

"Perhaps most puzzling is Northern Illinois at No. 121. The Huskies play in the ninth-smallest stadium in the FBS and still couldn’t manage to fill even half of their seats last season. Throw in the fact that NIU went 8-6 (with half of the losses coming vs. Iowa, Utah and Florida State) and won the MAC title in 2018 and the number becomes even more troubling."

IMO, hope is that this starts to change dramatically beginning this year with:
1. New ticket packages, especially the new "Saturday Special" option, that recognize what fans want given the weekday night games.
2. Excitement generated by the launch of the THammock Era (and the end of the boring, predictable RCarey Era).
3. Possible bowl game win (we hope), ending a critical post-season drought. Better MAC bowl game ties also a plus.
4. A return to a home game schedule of 4 Saturdays and 2 weekdays starting in 2020. A plus is the almost-annual scheduling of in-state FCS teams for local draw.

We'll see if it works starting Aug. 31.

I will go with 16,500. NIU's enrollment numbers and season ticket sales wont support sell outs anymore. Normally even with the ESPN deal, this is the type of game that students could make up for and get near a sellout. Until NIU's gets enrollment up again, I do not think a sell out is possible unless you bring in a big name P5.

Post to move this up. Better predictions? Revisions?
This is the launch of a new era. Since the OP, we've had the Saturday Special ticket option, a ton of social media, practice updates, tickets getting mailed out. Anyone see anything from the Illinois State end on tickets bought/claimed/reserved? Anyone see anything on game-day activities?

This game will no doubt draw more than any other home opener in the past several years. Local flavor with in state opponent, I promise you it will fill more than Utah. With good weather, easily 20k.

Also, Carey did zero to help attendance. The more I recollect on him, what a marketing dud. I’m not saying he was a terrible coach, but you cannot disagree how he did zilch to get butts in the seats

Dave Doeren tried a few different stunts, including skydiving, to try and boost attendance. He was really frustrated after his efforts did little to put more butts in the seats.

Yea, I'm not convinced the coach will make much difference. They should go to the dorms where students are congregated and encourage them to go to the games. And maybe they have done that. I know Pettibone did that when I was at NIU. Otherwise I don't see that much that they can do.

It looks like the Huskies have not had a home game with over 18k since the EIU game in 2013, so maybe I was too ambitious with my 20k+ prediction. I still think this will be the best attended game in seasons and will break the 18K mark.

I dont see a decent bump in attendance from ISU fans. They have 20k students and a combined city population of 130k but draw about 9k a game. Maybe at best they provide an extra 1k in fans more than eastern or western. if their chicago area alumni dont go down to bloomington, i doubt they head out to dekalb.

Any number over 16,000 is all due to the Hammock Effect

Actually, that year (2013) was the last time NIU had at least 17,000 for each home game, according to the "official" numbers ...

Sept. 21 Eastern Illinois 23,595 (recorded at capacity)
Oct. 12 Akron 23,595 (Homecoming) (recorded at capacity)
Oct. 26 Eastern Michigan 20,185
Nov. 13 Ball State 18,290 (weds)
Nov. 26 Western Michigan 17,679 (Tues.)

Average: 20,669 ... with two sellouts! And look at those weekday night numbers! I think the EIU or Akron game is the one in some of the stadium aerial photos that show HS full.

There also was one other game over 18k ... CMU, Homecoming, 2014, listed at 20,122 ... but since then, you're right. And only two over 17k, both in 2015.

RE: Opener attendance predictions ??? Just for fun
Something is up with college football attendance nationally. I'm watching my other favorite underdog, in the University of Hawaii. They're a pretty decent team, with an entertaining offense, and they regularly go to Bowls. Yesterday they played a PAC 12 team in Arizona at home, and I would wager to say that Aloha stadium was probably at 20% capacity. The stadium is centrally located in the center of the island and tickets aren't expensive. When I was a kid, that stadium used to be at 80% capacity, no matter who they played. It was a big deal on the island for a Bows' game. Heck, they put up yards and points on Arizona and even won. I wonder what gives?
