2020 FB schedule without UCONN - speculation
So without UCONN on the schedule in 2020 and beyond, we have a hole to fill. So let's start the speculation.

I looked at future schedules for a bunch of teams to see who appeared to have open dates in 2020. I figure that "buy" games are expensive, and we probably don't need any more FCS teams on our schedule. And don't forget, there are 4 other AAC East teams with holes in their schedule. (And UCONN needs to fill up their schedule.) There could be some real competition for opponents here.

So, who could we get a quick home and home with? All the MAC teams appeared full up (advantage, short drive). I did find some open spots on the schedule with UAB and Old Dominion.

Or, do we offer UCONN a home and home to fill that hole in both of our schedules?

Note: I generally did not look at P5 teams. I doubt many have 2020 dates available.

No hole to fill just a different slate of conference opponents.

One thing i would look into would be to play UConn in 2020 and/or 2021 instead of Murray State and Austin Peay.

I would accept a home game with UConn in place of an FCS team if there wasn't a better opportunity. I would not accept a home and home with UConn.

Did I hear Saban complaining that Alabama can't ever find people to play?

RE: 2020 FB schedule without UCONN - speculation
Honestly, the first consideration is what the AAC does. If the AAC replaces UConn with another FB program, then the problem is solved; the new program just takes UConn's conference slots and we're good.

Personally, I wouldn't mind scheduling UConn for a "Home-and-Home" for TWO (2) years (2020-2021) JUST TO FILL OUT THE SCHEDULE, assuming the conference doesn't add a FB member before then. Remember, the open dates are going to be in November and it will be difficult to find somebody to slot in during conference play. We could do worse that UConn; we have history with them, they are not FCS (yet), and they don't bring the stink of Liberty or someone like that.

Buying a couple of years...assuming the Conference doesn't remedy the situation earlier...isn't the worst possible outcome.

Yeah, I thought that too.

There is no schedule to fill. The league will rework the conference schedule. My suggestion is dumping future FCS games for UConn.

UConn will be worse than most FCS teams.

Why do any thing that helps them.

They should be dead to all AAC teams.

I agree.

Although with our history, I have no problem with doing home-and-home if they throw in an annual basketball series for the next 10 years. It'd be great to keep up a basketball rivalry with them now that Louisville no longer deigns to play us.

RE: 2020 FB schedule without UCONN - speculation
I thought the NCAA made changes and in theory we could go to one division and have the top 2 teams meet, so we would just play a different opponent and miss 1 less school.

But honestly I can't remember if that passed or not. I know the Big 12 was pushing it hard and then went to divisions, but for some reason I thought it passed after that.

Maybe someone knows for sure if that is an option or not.

I looked it up. You can have a championship game with 12 or more teams in 2 divisions, or less than 12 with a true round robin schedule. As I interpreted what I read, we might need a waiver from the NCAA to have a championship game with 11 teams in 2 divisions.

Currently, AAC teams have 5 games against division opponents, and 3 games against the other division opponents, 8 league games total.

If the East division shrinks to 5, then I don't know that we can count on the AAC providing the East division teams with an 8th in league game. Thus, the speculation for this thread. We may need a 5th non-league game for 2020 and 2021.

11 teams no division, 8 conference games. Waiver for at least two years should be easy. Big Ten and ACC want divisionless football too.

This.

We already know that isn’t happening. The league is going to use the Big Ten’s 11 team model and ask for a waiver. There isn’t a fifth non-conference game or unbalanced divisions. Maybe the eventually add someone if the waiver is temporary.

We already have on record the Big Ten and ACC in support of divisionless conferences that let their top two teams plays in a championship game. The Big XII would likely agree. The PAC-12 would benefit as well. Only the SEC might feel differently but they might like the idea as well.
