Exclamation Competition is bringing the best out of Childers
We have a real QB battle on our hands, and our offense seems to be buying in : https://www.daily-chronicle.com/lists/20...xml?page=1

There very well could be, but we are going to be told “it’s really close” even if it’s not.

RE: Competition is bringing the best out of Childers
Maybe Childers is the guy. If he can play like he did in the MACC last year we'll have a good season.

Either way, I trust Hammock to make the right call.\

Go Huskies.

We once beat a B1G team without knowing who was #1 and who was #3.

I wonder if this will be a situation where it could be easier to start the the season with the 2nd option and then put in the number 1 at the start of conference season

Not with a new offense. Whom ever is qb is going to need as happen many game reps as possible to get comfortable. But I can see the #2 getting a few reps a game. Not a true rotational situation. Just a series or two.

I just wonder if the starter for the first 4 games will be upright by game 5.

RE: Competition is bringing the best out of Childers
Sounds like Bowers is lighting it up early and often:

https://shawnews.secondstreetapp.com/api...a+August+3

“ And finally, I'll close on the QB battle. Incumbent Marcus Childers went first in most drills, but he and transfer Ross Bowers split time with the first team. In 7-on-7 drills, the differences between the two was on display. Bowers went deep a lot, with a bunch of nice passes, including finding Tyrice Richie in stride in the end zone, splitting a double team.

Childers looked a lot like last year, preferring more shorter passes, even in 7-on-7s, and when it went to full team drills he would utilize his legs and scramble.” (Welp)

Carifio's an idiot.

Wait to hear reports from Kaleb before assessing the QB battle, but yeah, all early indications point to Bowers being the man.

Since most of what he said was objective observations (as opposed to subjective analysis), whether Carifio's an idiot or not becomes less important. And what he said was not really surprising.

Carifio is an idiot.

What he wrote was more editorialized commentary than objective observation, as he's an idiot, he's incapable of understanding what is in front of him.

Points we can all agree on:
1) Carifio is an idiot.
2) What he writes is of no value.

GO NIU!

Beat Utah.

RE: Competition is bringing the best out of Childers
My major takeaway from that article is that Childers looked like last years version of Childers which will not be enough to continue to be the starter if Bowers can make all the throws accurately. (Regardless of Carifio’s idiocy)

Through 2 Practices:

1) Venom for reporter covering team.

2) Bowers is starter.

That was quick.

We still got a few more weeks to kill.

Also, is the implication that he didn't have competition the previous years.

If Bowers isn't the starter, he must be hurt. Childers was Phil Horvath 2.0.

Horvath had the benefit of playing for one of the best coaches in college football history though. Childers, not so much. I think it all comes back to what Coach Hammock said that he is going to ALLOW players to USE their talent. That is why a QB competition not possible under Carey, QB skillsets and talents were not needed or even demanded to run the offense. Impossible to rate performance when you demand no skill sets in the performance.

Novak? No way is he one of the best in college football history.

Novak as one of the best in college football history is quite a stretch, but coming from MD, an expected comparison.

What Novak is is the best coach in the history at NIU at building a program and completely altering a culture. Sure, it's possible someone else could have done it, but he was the right man at that time and kudos to he and Cary Groth for seeing it through.

Hammock is in a somewhat similar position now where he needs to change the perception of the program to its own fans (this board). It's amazing how much doom and gloom there is on the board for a program that has been very, very good for the past fifteen years.

Very similar to how some Cub fans now cannot accept the playoffs and 90+ wins every year as "good".....it's actually quite sickening that groups cannot enjoy the good times in sports and always look for something negative--although the real negative isn't too far in the past.
