They are on hold because UConn will be continuing a non-conference basketball scheduling agreement with the AAC.

It will be brutal to construct a 2020 schedule in the time allotted. Here is the thing---all the options being ballyhooed arent going to come to fruition because they all are likely interested in September games (where UConn is already full). Filling October and November is the challenge for indy schools---September is easy. Because September is already full for UConn---almost none of those "option" being talked about will end up bearing fruit for 2020. That said, it can be done. Liberty built a schedule from scratch in an amazingly short period of time---but it didnt come cheap. UConn will need to get schools that are already booked for 2020 to change existing games. The way that gets accomplished is by waving cash around. Thats how Liberty did it.

Well, UConn has September 2020 games against independent UMass and FCS Maine. It would be fairly straightforward to move those two games back to November 2020 and replace them with quality P5 opponents in September.

I note that Army still has a 2020 opening in November. Schedule Liberty, who pushes back one of its two 2020 FCS games, and that fills another late-season hole.

P5 teams that have 2020 openings:

TCU (2)
Arkansas (2)
Virginia Tech
South Carolina

I also note that UCF has *two* open OOC spots in 2020 and SMU needs another OOC game.

I could see a 2020 UConn schedule that looks something like this:

SEPTEMBER
v. Virginia Tech in Landover, Maryland or East Rutherford, New Jersey
at Illinois
at TCU
Indiana

OCTOBER
UCF
at SMU
Old Dominion
at Liberty

NOVEMBER
UMass
at Arkansas
FCS Maine
at Army

Because FCS schools play payday games in November all the time. Whether its Maine or Western Carolina (from Liberty's schedule). Whatever.

You kinda have to get into the weeds on some of those "openings". For instance---TCU. They have one game vs Cal on the road for 2020. They only get 3 OOC games. They always play an FCS tune up---and then they usually play SMU in a game that will always be played in the Dallas-Ft Worth Metroplex (home or away--so little travel). As you noted---SMU has an opening for 2020 as well. TCU vs SMU in 2020 is likely all but signed. Thus, TCU is probably going to be a "no" for UConn in 2020. Its certainly a "no" from TCU for an away game in Hartford. Now this is what Im talking about----if UConn comes with enough money---maybe they can talk SMU into going to Hartford in 2020 and then UConn can travel to Ft Worth the same year in a one-and-done home game for TCU. But its going to require enough cash for those two teams to drop an easy travel game that is an annual rivalry in order to schedule UConn. I suspect these two arent really very strong possibilities for UConn.

My guess is once you start doing a deeper dive, you'll find many of those teams that appear to have 2020 openings do not really have openings.

The Mighty Eastern Indies LIVE!!!

A rough and tumble group lead by the Cadets of West Point, flanked by the Minutemen, Huskies, and Flames!

Liberty would probably be considered a Southern Independent, but their online program is nationwide so they suffice for the headline.

RE: UConn Exit Official; Joining Big East 7/1/20
I suspect those 4 games in Basketball with AAC games comes at a price to the AAC. They will probably have to agree to schedule a Football game annually in October or November with UConn.

1. move Maine/FCS game to November or late October to open up September 19 slot for G5 opponent (still a dozen possibles)
2. Take Liberty up on a series, starting with replacing WCU (their 2nd FCS opponent in 2020) on November 14th
3. NMSU can schedule a 13th game (at Hawaii October 10th, so allowed a 13th game) on November 28th
4. Accept two(2) road kill games against P5 schools (SEC and ACC) in October and November
5. There are a few G5 schools like FIU (2 open slots still) that typically schedule later season OOC games -- at least one will happen.
6. if my hunch is right that the AAC agreed to a game a year against UConn FB for the basketball games, then add one game in October (UConn host)
7. Add a 2nd FCS

That is butt ugly but it's 12 games.

Not in the CAA they don't.

sorry but I don't think you are right. The AAC had the leverage here, not UConn. UConn wanted out, not the other way.

Ironically SC is one of the few P5 teams with an opening still for next year. Wonder if we try to bring them to Williams Brice?

Y'all finally ready for that rematch huh? That would be a nice away game for us.

And there are more possibilities in addition to those. There are 3 or 4 teams playing at Hawai'i in 2020 that could schedule one more game because they're allowed to play 13 and only have 12 lined up so far.

Part of the strategy has to be lining up home games beyond 2020, so once UConn has filled the minimum required number of home games, they can use some of the remaining spots on their schedule to play the first game of a home/home series on the road in 2020.

Except for the fact that the 2020 schedule for UMass is complete and they have no November open dates to move the game to. There are four weekends in November 2020 and UMass has a FBS game scheduled in all of them.

3 of those games are against fellow independents. Wouldn't be surprised to see any (or all) of them move some games around to help out the newb.

Heck, I'm pretty sure BYU wants to help. Though we have less wiggle room.
