PAC to keep using neutral site venues for title games through 2021

To review:

2019 - Santa Clara
2020 - Inglewood
2021 - Las Vegas

I'm a bit surprised that they're not going with a permanent site. Could we see Phoenix and San Diego get in the mix?

I don't think the neutral site is a bad idea, but they shouldn't be going to Santa Clara. Wonderful stadium, but it's just too expensive for most people to travel there, especially on short notice. That and the site is a good distance away from the areas tourists might want to peruse on a short trip.

The Santa Clara stadium isn't wonderful. Not for 49ers games, and not for the Pac-12 or any other game. You're right that it's a poor location for out of town visitors who are there for a few days. The 49ers guaranteed a lot of money for the game because they wanted to host events in their stadium, but the cash grab was the only positive thing about playing the CCG there.

I suppose someone liked the idea of playing the game in two brand new stadiums, but I would have just put the game in Vegas both years. (See below.)

When the ACC invented the conference tournament in 1953, it was because our teams wanted to play and beat each other more and more often than national glory.
Not only were we playing a round robin in basketball, then we turned around at the end of the season and strapped on our shoes again. And if that was not enough, the four North Carolina schools played a pre-conference tournament called the Big Four.
So what you had is the possibility for Duke, Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest to play one another in basketball as many as 5 times in a season if the also happened to meet in the NIT or the NCAA tournament.
There was a passion for ACC teams to play amongst themselves.
The PAC does not demonstrate that passion in their football championship game, and if they weren't getting paid for it to be on TV they would be better off not playing it at all. Their championship game needs a permanent home and Las Vegas is a logical choice, even if no one in Las Vegas knows there is a PAC.

The McMurphy tweet shown in the OP is incorrect. Scott announced that the football CCG will be in Las Vegas both years, 2020 and 2021, and is not going to LA.

TWO very recent Pac-12 related misses by McMurphy. This and I Bowl (at least as relates to MWC).

Yeah, McMurphy definitely jumped the gun on the bowls.

Scott said today that the Pac-12 isn't ready to announce the entire future bowl lineup and would only confirm that the top 3 are Rose, Alamo, Las Vegas. I'd guess that means (1) some of the other bowls might move up or down in the order depending on how much money they end up paying, and (2) the last ("8th") bowl slot will either not be filled, or it will be something like the MWC's last slot, i.e., the announcement will be that ESPN will find a place for that team somewhere in one of its bowls.

Granted, I've never been to a game there, but it certainly looks cool on TV. 03-lmfao

One article on Levi's stadium hosting the CFP championship praised it as good stadium in a terrible place for anyone coming from outside the city to see the game and predicted that the CFP wouldn't come back because of it being a hassle.

It's like the Arizona Cardinals stadium in that way. Too remote from where visitors want to be.

The new LA and Vegas stadiums are much better located for events like this. LA is getting a CFP title game (January 2023) and Las Vegas should get one eventually.

Quote:Allegiant Stadium is still a year away from opening, but on Tuesday the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors authorized $3 million in upfront funding to stage the Pac-12 Conference Football Championship Game in 2020 and 2021.

It’s the first funded special event for the 65,000-seat, $1.9 billion indoor stadium, although other events, including the Las Vegas Bowl, are expected to use the venue once it opens in August 2020.

The Pac-12, a top-tier league of 12 universities in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, opted in 2014 to stage its championship game on a neutral field and has scheduled it at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
