Rice is supposed to be building a bubble style IPF this August... But it appears there are some permitting issues.

I recently researched this for our east division when someone posted that we need an IPF. That was met with controversy, that we really need to focus on other stuff first. Anyway, in the EAST, the only team with an IPF is Marshall.

App's had the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility since 2007.

Quote:Adjacent to Kidd Brewer Stadium and Sywassink/Lloyd Family Softball Stadium, the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility features an 80-by-60-yard FieldTurf surface which allows all 20 Mountaineer varsity teams to train and condition away from the High Country elements.

It includes a full athletic training room, offices and storage room and all the amenities needed to conduct practices. In addition to the FieldTurf surface, the building houses batting cages for baseball and softball batting practice.

The Sofield Facility officially opened in October 2007.

Yeah, you have a unique challenge among Southeast programs given your longer winters. I wouldn't hate it if ODU had one but other than July/August heat, the weather that would make outdoor practice impossible (hurricanes, flooding, one inch of snow) would shut the school down anyway.

Yeh, when you get snow from Oct-May you have to have a place to practice.

ODU practice field.

A shovel is cheaper than an IPF though.

I've posted this information in other threads, but since you asked...

Information regarding the new facility...

* $17 million project to be completed this fall
* Over 83,000 sq feet.
* Will feature a full length practice field with 55 foot high ceiling
* Includes an entrance lobby
* Includes a Mean Green recruiting lounge.
* Future plans allow for the structure to be connected to the athletic center.

Marshall has a nice IPF. It isn't a bubble, isn't made cheap, and is a multi use facility. Also has study center, rehab facility with underwater treadmills etc, tutoring, and not sure what else.

It is named after billionaire Chris Cline who was just killed in the helicopter crash. I included a pic if the buffalo statues just for him. He really wanted these statues outside the facility. Said he didn't care how much they cost he would pay for them. AD checked and it ended up being over $1 million and he said done, order them.

The net in the last picture is retractable and so are the goal posts. The posts don't come all the way down as a way to save space and prevent people from running in to them. The goal posts come down to normal height when wanted/needed.

I think the total project was over $30 million. Not sure if that counts the buffalo statues or not lol. It is also the building to the right of our stadium in my signature picture.

If you have a full football field for an IPF, why not just dome your stadium and condition the space? It seems like that would be cheaper.

If Marshall finds their program in that situation again, send the business my way. I'd love to get a million dollar commission. And, the practice facility looks great! 04-cheers

It's not just for football. It has a track and the turf rolls out for baseball practice, etc...It's still very much winter here when baseball starts.

RE: Who all has or is currently building an IPF?
We did have plans for one that was going to be funded by a medical group, but a different medical group raised a stink (with some good reasons) so it fell in to bureaucratic hell and has not been seen since. The real downer is that the facility was going to allow us to offer some doctorate programs as part of a joint effort with another state university.
