Cortez Lewis enters transfer portal
Yet another loss to an already thin receiving corps. Thought he was almost guaranteed a starting spot with the lack of experience at that position. After joining WMU as a grad transfer in May he’s decided to look elsewhere. https://www.westernherald.com/sports/art...61175.html

This is moderately old news yet there still isn't any 'reason' given to why he would so quickly decide to leave WMU... Seems odd... possibly he noticed during spring practices that his talent level wasn't as elevated to guarantee him solid playing time... up against the likes of Eskridge, Bussell, Hall, Crooms... etc..

Losing him isn't as big of a deal as many think... he was basically going to be this years Drake Harris... who was less than impressive for most of last year. I like the idea of giving more playing time to the youngsters on this squad going forward.

I agree. It's not like 2017 where we have a mostly unproven receiver corps. Hall is ready to bust out, Arnett is experienced, and Ricci is the go-to receiver when needed. We looked good in two TE sets last season. We have a fifth-year senior QB to make it all work. We can always pull our best receiving threat back from corner when needed.

We need Bussell to play well and one more talented freshman to play some meaningful snaps. We do have a boatload of freshmen receivers, so I have to imagine that one or two very good ones are in there amongst all those recruiting stars.

My initial reaction was the other way around, in that maybe someone got in his ear and convinced him he could do "better."

This was less expected following the departures of Reed and Watson, which basically assured him a better shot at playing time.

We might as well get used to it. The portal is producing more of a 'free agency' environment than we're used to seeing. I see Harbaugh is campaigning to get rid of the sit-out-one-year clause, obviously so the football factories can really use the G5 and lower-rung P5s as a farm system in recruiting.

Can't lose something you never really had.

The young man never made it to fall camp or played a game for us.
