MAC FB programs - social media
Well, MAC Media day is this week and fall camp will be here before we know it. It got me thinking about the social media following that MAC programs have. P5 programs get a zillion times more attention and I wanted to see just how warranted that is. I was also curious how the MAC teams stack up to each other. Note: these are just the football program pages, not the overall pages for the athletic department or the university.
Teams ranked by Facebook followers on official team account:
1. WMU - 48,217
2. Toledo - 35,551
3. CMU - 18,467
4. Ohio - 14,106
5. NIU -10,629
6. EMU - 10,598
7. Miami - 9,004
8. BGSU - 7,481
9. Akron - 5,751
10. Ball State - 5,655
11. Buffalo - 4,827
12. Kent State - 1,813
Teams ranked by Twitter followers on official team account:
1. WMU - 49,981
2. CMU - 37,281
3. Ball State - 30,570
4. NIU - 27,674
5. Ohio - 27,359
6. Miami - 24,718
7. Toledo - 24,083
8. Buffalo - 21,099
9. BGSU - 20,796
10. Kent State - 20,786
11. EMU - 20,555
12. Akron - 20,119
Something that stands out right away: WMU is dominating the MAC in social media followers. Fleck and the Cotton Bowl probably boosted those numbers, but it's still shocking how far ahead we are. The MAC as a whole has a pretty sad following. WMU's numbers are not far off from the bottom-feeders of the B1G, though. (In fact, Northwestern only has 32,447 followers on Twitter)
Ball State has a great Twitter following for how terrible they've been. And annual MAC champs NIU have a ho-hum social media presence. The MAC West in general has a much more engaged football fandom than the East, which is not surprising.
Just something interesting to kick around while we kill time.
