Charlie runs 51.56 - a season's best (this is his weakest event).

Zach Ziemek did not start the 400! He's the only American with the qualifying mark (8200). The only way he'll make it to Worlds is if no one else hits 8200 (so far he's the only American to do so).

RE: Rice Track and Field update - including USATF Championships
He is behind the pace from his lifetime best, set earlier this summer in Dallas. He was at 4346, on his way to 8094.

Here's the difference:

100 meters +18
Long jump +9
Shot put -52
High Jump -54
400 Meters +2

There are not enough points on Day 2 for him to reach 8200. The goal now is to get on the podium (top 3).

Here are Scott's season best marks in the upcoming events:

110 Hurdles - 14.61 (897) *
Discus - 37.51 (614)
Pole Vault - 4.80 (849)
Javelin - 61.85 (766) *
1500 Meters - 4:43.82 (656)

4251 + 3782 = 8033

* LIFETIME bests

Well, if he tied all lifetime bests in the first 4 events tomorrow, he'd still have to run a gigantic PB in the 1500 (4:34.40) to reach 8200. So, it's not impossible IF he can have a great second day, with perhaps new PBs so he won't have to run so fast in the 1500.

She gave birth to a daughter last November and obviously is not back in condition.

She did advance but just barely.

In reading up on Ince this morning, she is also competing in the Pan American Games in two weeks. She was third and second at the last two national championships (behind Winger, who had won this event 8 straight times).

ETA - according to the write-up on riceowls.com, she's the first Owl to win a national title in track and field since Claudia Haywood won the triple jump in 1993.

Williams' discus throw of 49.47 meters (859 points) was 95 points more than Simmons' and 232 points more than Filip's ... and thrust him into the lead.

After the pole vault -- and with the javelin & 1,500-meter run remaining -- Filip is 219 points below 3rd place and 37 points above 5th.

The top 6:

1 - Devon Williams (Unattached): 6,942
2 - Solomon Simmons (Unattached): 6,897
3 - Harrison Williams (Stanford): 6,856
4 - Scott Filip (Unattached): 6,637
5 - Steven Bastien (Unattached): 6,600
6 - Kurt Brondyke (Unattached): 6,405

The PV isn't over. Charlie Card-Childers is still competing after tying his PR at 4.90 meters (16-0 3/4). He's doing quite well and has moved into 9th place overall at 6192 points. With his best event (javelin) coming up, he is looking very solid to get himself a new decathlon PR (7529).

Scott just missed his final attempt at 4.90 (16' 0¾") meters in the pole vault. Charlie has cleared that height for a lifetime best, and will go up to 5 meters (16' 4¾"). He has two more attempts.

Harrison Williams is still alive in the other pit. He has one more attempt at 5.40 meters (17' 8½")

Charlie misses all three attempts at 5 meters. Still, a great day of vaulting for him.

Top 4 heading into Javelin

1 - Devon Williams, 6942
2 - Solomon Simmons, 6897
3 - Harrison Williams, 6856
4 - Scott Filip, 6637

DW has a lifetime best of 60.26 in the javelin (821 points) and 4:33.15 in the 1500 (508 points) so that would put him at nearly 8300 points if he equals those 2 marks in the final 2 events

SS is solid in the javelin (65.70, 898 points) and is the slowest in the 1500 of the top 4 (4:40.46, 446). So he could be closing in on 8250 points.

HW is the weakest javelin thrower of the top four (56.41, 766) but the fastest 1500 (4:27.88, 557). That would get him just under 8200 points.

SF needs a big javelin (61.85, 844). His 1500 best isn't great (4:37.35, 471). Even two PR's might not get him to 8000 although he would be close.

It's not over but Filip needs a huge javelin and one of the top 3 to really slip up in that event.

ETA - Simmons has already finished in the javelin and didn't do that well (51.42, just 610 points). So he gave up a bunch of points compared to his personal best.

Ooops. Mea culpa. I must have mis-read the results charts. Sorry for the inaccuracy/confusion. Thanks for correcting my error.

Filip improved some on his final javelin throw to close the gap but it seems unlikely he'll be in the top 3 unless one of those 3 guys is hurt and can't compete/finish the 1500.

1 - D. Williams 7691
2 - Simmons 7507
3 - H. Williams 7441
4 - Filip 7352

9 - Card-Childers 6904
