Rice Track and Field update - including USATF Championships
Rice sophomore Erna Gunnarsdöttir finished 3rd in the shot put at the European U20 Track and Field Championships in Borås, Sweden.

Earlier this summer, she won the shot put, discus, and hammer at the Iceland U20 Track and Field Championships.

RE: Rice Track and Field update
Rice will have 3 former and 1 current Owl at this weekend's USATF Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. This is a big event because it will determine the USA team for the 2019 World Championships.

All 4 will be in action on Thursday.

2:45 - Decathlon begins with Scott Filip and Charlie Card-Childers.

6:00 - finals in the women's javelin with Ari Ince.

6:45 - finals in the women's triple jump with current Owl Michelle Fokam.

Scott Filip had a lifetime best of 10.61 in the 100 meters (949 points), and is in 2nd place overall after 1 event. Charlie Card-Childers is in 13th with 810.

The long jump is taking place now.

Still second after the long jump (2nd event).

The leader, Solomon Simmons, fouled on his first two attempts, but pulled out a season-best 7.5-meter jump on his final one to avoid a no-mark and stay in the lead. (He has the top scores in both events so far.)

The top four:

1 - Solomon Simmons (Unattached): 1,887
2 - Scott Filip (Unattached): 1,867
3 - Steven Bastien (Unattached): 1,858
4 - Devon Williams (Unattached): 1,824

World Championships qualifying standard is 61.50 meters so yes, she has a very good chance of making it. Apparently that's the #4 all time US women's javelin mark (63.54 - 208 feet, 5 inches) and was set last month at the JavFest.

Ince wins the javelin with a solid 5th round throw of 61.06 meters. I would think she's a near lock to compete in the World Championships now (which are in Doha, Qatar 9/28 thru 10/6). But this is USA Track and Field we're talking about so you never know.

Congrats to her. I wonder when our last USA champion was in track and field? I'm pretty sure we had a few in the 90's on the women's side. Maybe something since then but I don't know for sure.

I remember when I was a freshman, one of Rice's claims to athletic fame was that no other SWC school had scored as many points cumulatively in the NCAA national track and field championships as Rice had. I know that's a different metric from this, but just thinking about it makes me wonder what those standings would look like today.

She will be competing at Worlds since she has the qualifying mark of 61.50 (she's thrown 63.54, which places her at #15 in the world right now).

Kara Winger, who finished 2nd today, will also be at Worlds (previous qualifying mark).

In the Decathlon, Scott finished in a three-way tie for 8th in the 4th event -- high jump. He was just ahead of Simmons (T11) ... but the difference was fewer misses, so the points are the same (749 / 6-4¼).

The Top 5:

1 - Solomon Simmons (Unattached): 3,432
2 - Steven Bastien (Unattached): 3,347
3 - Scott Filip (Unattached): 3,340
4 - Zach Ziemek (adidas WCS): 3,309

Michelle Fokam finishes in 12th place - only 8 advance to the final (3 more jumps).

Congratulations on a great season and looking forward to next year and the Olympic Trials. I'm not sure if she will redshirt in 2020 to prepare for the trials.

Allison Felix did not get out of the first round in the 400 meters!

She gave birth to a daughter last November and obviously is not back in condition.

The final event of the first day in the Decathlon is the 400 meters, scheduled for 8:02 CDT.

Charlie will be in Heat 1, and Scott in Heat 2.

It would be really helpful if Scott can get below 48 seconds. His lifetime best is 47.58.

To reach 4200 for the first day, Scott needs only a 49.02.
