College Hockey Season 2019-20
We drop the puck in 82 days to start a new season.

I found this interesting:
https://gophersports.com/news/2019/7/11/...opherDaily

Univ Minn is spending big bucks on a face lift in the player areas. I wondered why and considered that they are trying to use their $$$ to help with recruitment. Last year the Gophers finished 20 in rpi (which isn't bad). But their "little brothers" at Minn-Duluth, St. Cloud State, and Minn State-Makato finished 1,2, and 4. Univ Minn is getting out-recruited in their own state by 3 d2 schools. Must be causing them heartburn. The article also said, "Season tickets start at $500 – the lowest price point for season tickets at the University of Minnesota since 1999-2000." They are rolling prices back 20 years to get more bodies in Mariucci Arena.

Mix a bad realignment deal with a bad coaching hire and this is what happens. All of their old rivals are in the NCHC and the fans don't care about any of the Big Ten teams except maybe Wisconsin. They've also been a lot more rigid about recruiting than others in the past, preferring to get their talent all from at home rather than getting the best of what's out there.

In other news.... Omaha hockey has recruited its 1st cyborg. He has been programmed to detest anything related to North Dakota.

PS. Welcome back for his Sophomore season #5 John Schuldt from Minnetonka MN.

I was surfing around and decided to visit AIC. They have a nicely done review of their amazing season with great photography interspersed with some youtube clips. If you are interested:

Arizona State's season starts in just 11 days. They are taking a "field trip" to Beijing from Aug. 1 to 12.
https://thesundevils.com/news/2019/5/7/m...ijing.aspx

"ASU will play the Kontinental Hockey League's Kunlun Red Star on Friday, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. GMT+8/4:30 a.m. MST, followed by the Chinese Olympic Team on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. GMT+8/4:30 a.m. MST. The next week, the Sun Devils plan to play a third game on Friday, Aug. 9."

ASU has 4000 students and 1 hockey player (Peter Zhong- R.Fr.) from China.
(must be nice to be at a rich univer$ity)

I predict they'll crush the Olympic team and get crushed by the KHL team. Either way this'll be an interesting barometer for just how good NCAA hockey is.

RE: College Hockey Season 2019-20
Just surfing around. I see that Univ St. Thomas (MN), the d3 school that is being booted out of their conference (MIAC) for being too good, has the interest of the WCHA (d1)...for their women's hockey program.

“I’ve had one solid conversation with their athletic director. I think they are most certainly in a time of transition and are exploring a lot of options right now. We talked at length about what St. Thomas would look like in the WCHA and I think they would be an outstanding fit if that’s the direction that works for their institution,” said Jennifer Flowers, the incoming women’s WCHA commissioner.

Later the article says,

By one estimation, it would take more than a decade for the Tommies to fully make the leap to D-I status, but with an established program, and an 800-seat arena in suburban Mendota Heights that would be the right size for a D-I women’s program, pieces are at least in place that make the jump feasible.

RE: College Hockey Season 2019-20
I just bumped into this 3 part series from last month of the Big 10 Hockey Commissioner being interviewed. I found it in the Fargo newspaper, but I think other papers also carried the story. He talks about the conference 6 years in, the situation in Illinois, and the possibilities of Nebraska and Iowa. In case you didn’t see it:

RE: College Hockey Season 2019-20
Pre-season is a magical time: everybody has the same number of wins (and losses) and everything is still possible.
Here is an interesting article as we count down the days:

Can polls predict college hockey’s national tournament field better than the PairWise?
https://www.uscho.com/2019/07/26/poll-wi...-pairwise/

Does "the PairWise Ranking predict the tournament field better than polls do? It doesn’t."
"the PairWise and the USCHO.com poll predict the national tournament field with indistinguishable accuracy, both in January and in March."
"If fans want to accurately predict the tournament field, even late in the regular season, the PWR is no better than the polls. In fact, polls often resemble the PairWise, and might even be a little better at picking the at-large bids."
