He has a huge family, and Cincinnati is a great place to grow up (and it's only gotten better since I grew up there). I don't think we'll be able to hold on to him, for lots of reasons (and obviously college towns can be great places to grow up too), but we uniquely have a lot to offer to coaches with families.

I think ultimately ego/ambition/money win out but I think it makes the decision much harder.

I think he sticks around until one of Penn St., Mich, OSU open up. Which could be any year. I think the hard call would be turning down Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, etc. No way he goes SEC or B12. ACC also seems like a poor fit.

If you look at who the Purdue's, Illinois, Indiana etc of the world have been hiring, it is not guys out of the American. I'm not too worried about them. My biggest concern right now is Michigan State. Mark Dantonio ain't getting any younger and they are just above that hump where I could see them returning to the well and it resonating with Fickell. From what I understand, he has a good relationship with Dantonio though so if he gets fired, it may not be a choice he'd make.

Dantonio will get his boy Narduzzi that job.

I think it's pretty clearly between Narduzzi and Fickell when that opens up...I'm really only scared about three places, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State and only one or two others that could be really attractive (Northwestern and Pitt). I don't see him leaving the Midwest, I think he recognizes that there aren't many jobs better than what he has currently as far as situation and general likelihood for success are concerned, and some of those (Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State) likely wouldn't touch him.

Now, could I be wrong and he bolts for a Kentucky or Illinois type in a year, sure, but I just don't think that plays to type for him. I don't see a guy who spent 16 years at one school (after 4 years of playing there and with one year at another school in the same state) AND who spent every year of his life in a "big" city bolting for a job in West Lafayette or Lexington or Urbana. Plus, I really do think a move again for his family is something that plays against all of these other options, he really did seem genuine when saying how much he and his wife were paining themselves over moving from Columbus and how much research they did about Cincinnati before really going after it. I just don't think that an impulse move to the middle of nowhere in the Midwest is something that meshes well with everything that he has said.

Hope you are right, but let's wait to see how Luke Fickell does over these next two years. With his recruiting prowess and the team comraderie he is building, he can take UC to the top of the G5, a conference championship and a shot at a New Year's bowl every season, something he would not have at Illinois, or Northwestern, or any mid-to lower tier Big 10 or Big 12 school. And you are right, I don't see a Penn State, a Michigan or a Wisconsin picking a guy that is viewed as an Ohio State lifer.

Brett Bielema played at Iowa and was team captain, coached at Iowa for 7 years and has a hawkeye tattooed on his leg. Wisconsin hired him as their coach for 6 years before he bailed to go to Arkansas. The AD's job is to find a good coach and I don't think we can hope and pray that Fickell's time at OSU is going to stop him for an AD from making him the coach at Penn State or Wisconsin or Michigan etc. I think he'd be at the top of the hiring board for any of your top-tier big 10 teams. I'm sure he has a hierarchy of which he would prefer but that risk will always be there.

As someone who moved from Cincinnati to West Lafayette and now has family in both.... I thought I'd hate West Lafayette, but I ended up liking it so much that I found a job in another college town within 2 hours of Chicago (Normal, IL).

Big 10 college towns aren't like Kokomo or Maysville. They're highly educated and there's tons of activities for kids. And 98% of everything you'd want to do in a normal month is within 10-15 minutes of your house. If you factor in driving time, there's actually more to do with kids in West Lafayette than there is in Columbus, Indy, or any big city except Cincinnati. I've heard that Bloomington and Urbana are both even better than West Lafayette (I know Normal is).

And if you want a world-class museum or pro sports, Chicago & Indianapolis are both within 2 hours of Urbana or West Lafayette.

The only "middle of nowhere" Big 10 college towns are Lincoln, State College, and Iowa City.

Yeah but State College has the creamery.

RE: Jaheim Thomas Commits
If he just wanted to jump to any P5 job, he could have done that after last year. So clearly he has some kind of plan for himself. Like others, I assume that involves a powerhouse Midwest program. Ped State, Michigan, MSU, Ohio State, Wisconsin, & ND all fit the bill. They’re also really hard jobs to land, which is good for us.

The other possibility is that he wins a ton of games or even goes undefeated but he bolts in frustration since we cannot make the playoff under the current corrupt system.

Yeah but State College has the creamery.

Just sayin'... Lincoln is a pretty good-sized city on it's own and it's only an hour from Omaha. Now, I'd hate to live anywhere in Nebraska, but it's hardly "in the middle of nowhere."

Iowa City, likewise, is a pretty big urban area and is not distant from Chicago. As a matter of fact, Iowa City is a big Cubs town.

State College...creamery or no...is pretty isolated. It IS a University town. That's all there is there.

(Edit: Bloomington, Indiana, is pretty isolated as well...)

I wholeheartedly believe Fickell is won't go to MSU. There's literally no reason for him to go there. What? Because he know Dantonio? He may leave but I highly doubt it's MSU.

I wholeheartedly believe Fickell is won't go to MSU. There's literally no reason for him to go there. What? Because he know Dantonio? He may leave but I highly doubt it's MSU.

No reason for him to go? We already had a coach leave UC for MSU once. And that was when we were in a 'BCS' conference. I hope he doesn't leave and I can make arguments why he shouldn't leave. But there are plenty of reason why someone would go to a school like Michigan St - money, the conference, fan support, the fact they recently won a Rose Bowl, etc.

I don't see it and I'll eat crow if it ever happens. Fickell has no connections outside of Dantonio to MSU. Fickell wanted this job and chased it. Dantonio spent his longest time as a assistant coach at MSU. He obviously liked the place. He wanted to coach there. The only coach who left looking for greener pastures just for hell of it was Butch. I'm for from an UC Homer and I don't, objectively, see Fickell going to MSU. He spent FOREVER at OSU you think he's going to go to MSU? Dantonio was at OSU for what 3 years? They are different people with different agendas and different desires. Fickell may leave for where he wants to go but there are only a handful of schools and none are in the state of Michigan.

By the way I lived half my life in Michigan. I love it there.

My hope is that Fickle will stay at Cincinnati at least until the last of his kids go off to school. That means we will see the development of most of his own recruiting classes.😎

People keep saying this. I haven't seen anything outside this board that suggests Fickell "chased" the UC job any more than he chased Pitt a few years ago.

Sure he wanted the UC job in fall 2017, but then again so did Butch Jones in fall 2009.

Well Fickle doesn't have an agent so that helps.

Fick was very aggressive in chasing the UC job. Early in the search he was a lower level name on the radar, but he was persistent in his interest and when he did get an interview he had a very specific plan for the program. If he was not so directly focused on making sure the admin understood how much he wanted the job, it very likely would have gone to Satterfield...

Also in 2011 is when he interviewed for Pitt. That was shortly after people were asking for his head at Ohio State and he wasn't sure if he would be there anymore. That's very different than Choosing to chase an opportunity. You don't think Ryan Day would love to have Fickell on his staff? The only time he interviewed for opportunity outside of Ohio was when he thought he didn't have a job anymore.

(These houghts are pure speculation but an educated guess based off of what happen a month prior to interviewing at Pitt... He was fired as OSU head coach...)
