Calkins nailed it

Oh, who needed Tiger Woods anyway?
Who needed all that chaos and all those crowds?
Who needed the parking bedlam and the security challenges and the hordes of celebrity-seeking fans?
What, you’re not buying this?
Yeah, me neither.
Woods missed the cut at the British Open Friday and then told reporters "I'm going to take a couple weeks off and get ready for the playoffs."
So it's official. Woods is not coming to Memphis to play in the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational next week. And that’s too bad.
It’s too bad because everyone would like to see Woods, of course,
because he is one of the biggest stars in the universe.
It’s too bad because Woods would bring in more money for the tournament, more eyeballs to the television sets and more good publicity for Memphis and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
And it’s too bad because Woods’ absence becomes the lead story, at least temporarily. Because the very short list of golfers who aren’t coming to Memphis will briefly overshadow the very long list of golfers who are.
Golfers who are coming to Memphis: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose, Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson.
Golfers who aren’t coming to Memphis: Tiger Woods.
See what I mean?

This is the city that came
thisclose to winning a college basketball championship, after all. This is the city that came
thisclose to getting into the Big East. This is the city that came
thisclose to winning the LeBron James lottery. This is the city that has now come
thisclose to getting Tiger Woods.
