Rice is the flagship because they beat Bama in 1954? So did we, by a score of 7-2...

We beat them 25-19 in 1953 when they were no 1 in the country.

That was the game where a Bama player jumped into the field from the sidelines to tackle a Rice player who was about to score a TD. The refs awarded Rice the TD, anyway.

Rice is the flagship of c-usa

1. Athletic programs throughout the country became fully integrated beginning in the early 70's

2. The Oilers came to town and the University of Houston rose to prominence in the late 60's, killing attendance at Rice Stadium

3. Rice University completely neglected it's athletics programs from 1970 -2010. No investments in infrastructure, marketing, and coaches' salaries.

4. The SWC, Rice's cash cow, broke up in 1994. Rice lost all of it's most meaningful rivalries, and hasn't come close to replacing them.

5. Rice was forced to join the WAC and CUSA. These conferences were a Godsend for the lifeline they provided, but didn't/don't provide Rice with regional rivals. These conferences also force Rice to spend exorbitant amounts of money on travel.

6. Fan and student apathy (a symptom of the 5 conditions above).

7. Pro football got big, and the best athletes no longer chose a school based on the degree it could give, but how easy it was to do their four years of pre-NFL.

Dickie Maegle, the player tackled, ended up with 4 TDs and 265 yards rushing on 11 carries, a 24.1 average.

Not a PhD in advanced math or a 3x pro bowler but I did see a penn alum is helping teach a class at Wharton

That was Alabama's Tommy "Off The Bench" Lewis, who was sitting on the Bama bench that jumped up as he saw Rice's halfback Dickie Moegle sprinting down the sideline, heading for what was a sure touchdown. Moegle was award the TD anyway.

I happen to think it's really cool that the kid came off the bench to tackle Maegle. His competitive spirit took him over for those couple seconds. I can't hold it against him.
