'Lunch is for cowards': Inside the grind of a day recruiting for a mid major coach
https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...jor-coach/

I posted this in the 2020 recruiting thread, but I thought it was interesting enough/relevant enough to warrant its own thread.

Crazy how much effort a coach has to put in to have a small chance at landing one guy.

I also thought the quote "He's one of those guys, if he plays well I won't be able to get him, and if he doesn't play well, I won't want him" was pretty funny.

The speculation I saw on Reddit thought it was likely the Kent State coach.

I’m glad you posted this.

I read it and wanted to post and comment, but I’m trying to heal, and declined.

But since you posted:

When I read this, I thought of TS and what he had to go through to recruit the talent that he recruited to W’burg.

Fingers are crossed that Dane and Co. can replicate / exceed TS’s recruiting successes because, as we all know, recruiting is the lifeblood of any college hoops program.

Here’s a one word review of this mess. Tedious. If that guy had any brains; he’d spend his time and budget elsewhere.

bleh... seems like he could probably spend his time better. But I'm sure he thinks it is worth it, and I assume he is correct or he wouldn't be there.

Life in the mid-majors is exactly that, you hope they do good enough to help you but not so great the big boys snipe him from you. Russell Westbrook is a perfect example, he actually committed to Kent State and then the big boys noticed. Sometimes the late bloomers stay committed to those who were in early out of loyalty, but it’s rare. Roosevelt Nix was one of them, stayed with his commitment and turned down schools like Michigan State, and now he’s in the NFL.

Our own Marcus Thornton committed early to the Tribe and stayed true, despite a barrage of schools and coaches from big time schools
continuing after him right into the summer after he graduated high school.

Marcus was a man of his word for sure.

At least years ago the recruiting ended once the LOI was signed, now the big boys get after and poach the mid major talent that they never gave the time of day to while in high school.
