What We Learned from AAC Media Day So Far
https://mattbrown.substack.com/p/what-we...from-media
Interesting article with respects to the fallout from AAC media deal, including thoughts on our new media deal. It includes an interesting nugget, which was also covered yesterday by Justin Williams in the Athletic.
Specifically, Mike Bohn wrote a letter to Mike Aresco back on February 24th, laying out points of contention: the costs associated with increased ESPN+ digital streaming content and a model of rights payouts that includes a merit-based distribution component. Suffice it to say Bohn believes UC needs to be getting a larger share of the conference revenue than say Tulsa or ECU.

I get where AD Bohn is coming from, but giving less money to Tulsa, Tulane, and ECU isn't going to make them more competitive in the revenue sports. For that reason, I am against unequal revenue sharing.

It's not about making the bottom dwellers more competitive with the top teams in the conference, it's about the top teams in the conference being more competitive with the top teams nationally.

So if we are asked to self produce more content for ESPN+ than say a Tulsa or Tulane , and absorb that cost , we are actually netting less from the TV contract than those schools. I'm on board with Bohn on this .

Conference should have merit based payouts. Cincinnati, UCF, USF, Houston, Memphis, Temple, and Navy should earn more based on TV appearances, bowl games, rankings, basketball success. Those group has way more value than ECU, Tulsa, Tulane, and SMU.
Honestly wish we could start over with those seven teams. Maybe keep SMU, add Marshall for 9. Wichita State, Dayton, and VCU for olympics.
Football: 8 game schedule, top two championship
Cincinnati
Memphis
UCF
USF
Navy
Temple
Houston
SMU
Marshall

ECU gets solid attendance numbers. I'd keep them if I were to pick one of the bottom tier teams. They have a decent ceiling.

Basically dump Tulsa and Tulane. Add Marshall, Dayton, and VCU.

I think the second tier games go to ESPN+ so I assume most UC games will be on the main ESPN networks and the lower tier schools will be on ESPN+ more often.

While I hope this is the case, the cynic in me says putting UC and Memphis on ESPN+ this year will help drive initial subscription numbers for them.

Neither agree or disagree on teams, just saying a 9 team conference is the ideal, total round robin, with 4 home and 4 away.

Playing devil's advocate, their attendance numbers have nothing to do with media revenue. This is driven by TV ratings. What kind of TV ratings do the Pirates get? Are all of their fans at the game? There are examples of teams that get good attendance/poor TV audience and visa versa, poor attendance/good TV audience (namely Miami Hurricanes). Football drives the bus but in basketball I bet ECU is a whole liability. Honestly how many of you ever watched an ECU game before they got in the conference with us (and other than UC games ever since?).

Please get off your Dayton horse. That is not happening and for about 107 reasons it won't ever happen. They can continue playing Fordham, LaSalle, George Washington and other CYO teams that they can beat. Boosts their NIT chances.

What we have learned thus far? That we're not P5 and we're not G5. The dreaded "Fair to Middlin" Conference.
