Search is 'wide-open' for USM women's coach
By Daimon Eklund
American Sports Writer
Southern Mississippi director of athletics Richard Giannini wasn't surprised when his women's basketball coach, Rick Reeves, left Southern Miss to coach at Gardner-Webb Friday.
Giannini said he and Reeves had been discussing the possible move for about a month.
"I'm really happy for him and his family," Giannini said. "He's provided us good leadership and been a good friend. I think it's a good situation for him."
Friday, Reeves also referred to Giannini as a friend.
"Richard Giannini and I have a very good relationship; I consider him a friend," Reeves said. "I enjoyed my time at Southern Miss."
Even though Giannini knew such a move was possible, he said he hadn't identified Reeves' successor yet.
"It's pretty well wide-open right now," Giannini said. "Right now I'm looking at a 30-day search."
The move was announced Friday, and as of Saturday morning Giannini said he'd already received four e-mails and phone calls from people inquiring about the position.

Mr. Giannini hit a homerun with his men's basketball search, here's hoping he can do the same with the women's search. Here is a recommendation. Lee Buchannan served as an assistant for one year at USM and is a proven winner. Any other suggestions out there?
