?Thank you to all of our donors for your support during the 2018-19 year! ?Kudos to our Letterwinners for giving back to @RiceAthletics at a rate of 13.7%, 5-points higher than last year!
Let’s make 2019-20 even better!

Sorry, but this is downright embarrassing, especially since well over half of these former student-athletes (i.e., basketball, football) were on full scholarship when they attended Rice.

Note-- the Annual Fund giving participation rate for all alumni this year was at 32%, only slightly behind our peers.

I have a hard time getting worked up without some context. What's the rate at UT? at Tulane? at Marshall?

Although jumping 37% in one year leads me to think we were woeful before...

I would say a nice improvement for a football team that only won 2 games

#1. Apples to oranges. What is the all-alumni giving rate to the Owl Club? Or the letterwinner giving rate to the Annual Fund?

#2. Assuming this is a low % amongst peers for letterwinner giving to an alma mater's athletic department (not yet established) . . . maybe it's Rice that should be embarrassed. Maybe this should be seen as a symptom of something wrong with Rice, not its letterwinners. Maybe the letterwinners -- maybe even more so than the general alumni population -- don't like where Rice Athletics is today and don't see a plan worth contributing to. Doesn't Rice need to earn its donations?

I like comparing apples to oranges.
Apples are smoother and usually sweeter. Oranges are bumpier and are often more tart. They’re both loaded with sugar

It's also not apple to oranges as one can give the Rice Annual Fund and designate that those funds go to the Owl Club.

As a former President of the R Association, I know for a fact that the rate was much higher in the 90's.... from memory, around 40%

Which has fundamentally changed more in the last 20-30 years: general attitudes, dispositions, and propensities toward charitable giving, or Rice Athletics?

Wasn't the R Association moved to the Rice Athletics empire a few years ago? It is now no longer an independent association of lettermen but an extension of the Owl Club under the control of the AD.
