That's Just the Way It Was
Thought you fellow "Tribe Talkers" might enjoy a couple of my recent "Estate Sale" finds.

Bob Sheeran and I were friends for a long time. One of the shared interests we had was looking for W&M memorabilia. We both owned at least one football card for every Tribe player that made it to the NFL, most baseball players that made it to the majors and tons of back programs (football and basketball). He helped me get my Dixie Bowl and Delta Bowl programs.

The one thing we both really enjoyed was finding strange W&M items. I think both of these probably fall in that category.

The first is a Helmet Bottle Opener (probably early 1980's). It was made to sit on your tailgate table and is very heavy and has the classic "feathers" logo.

[Image: wmbhel1.jpg?v=60699aff-8b7d-4f75-9e47-e52226c750d1]
[Image: wmbhel2.jpg?v=3283e080-dfe3-4855-8de4-164f88d39a4b]
[Image: wmbhel3.jpg?v=f7ebdb36-d03b-4f97-95cc-4e8dfc598753]

The second is the way you would have carried your clothes to the Campus Laundry to have them dropped off to be cleaned. It is a late 1940's - early 1950's student laundry bag. Talk about caricatures, this might even make Chief Wahoo look good.

[Image: wmbag1.jpg?v=4ffc8b02-ed67-45e8-8604-4fd083bb7b00]
[Image: wmbag2.jpg?v=657fdd3f-bb67-4bcb-8feb-d9af11306ce8]
[Image: wmbag3.jpg?v=91471d00-aae3-46d5-b7b6-9f160e848c89]

I think Bob would have agreed both of these belonged in the "unusual" category. 03-wink

It was surely a different time as you say.

The caf was called The Wigwam, the weekly Flathat sports column was named "Smoke Signals" (with two Indians in loin cloths signaling each other
via smoke signals), the freshmen "Papooses", the campus routinely referred to as "The Reservation" and, of course, the cheerleaders (both men and women) in Indian garb.

When I was a kid, it was always a treat when we got to eat at The Wigwam (which, IIRC, was in the Campus Center -- not the current caf). Or, for that matter, at Colonial Williamsburg's appetizingly-named "Motor House Cafeteria."

I'm also reminded of the "Heap Big Beef" restaurant out on Richmond Road that had a sort of Native American theme. https://havechanged.blogspot.com/2018/12...-beef.html
I'm not sure if the building is still there anymore -- it might be Manhattan Bagel now, or it might be gone.

Trinkle Hall [the student cafeteria] was NOT called The Wigwam. The "Wig" was a separate eating area adjacent to the cafeteria reserved for upperclassmen [back when the term ment men and women]. Food and drinks/sodas were ordered from a menu board. The Wig kept longer hours than the Caf and was more "social" than the Caf [similar to Corner Greeks or today's Paul's Delicatessen, but without the BEER]. The "Training Table" where the football team was fed was adjacent to the Wig and the athletes and other BMOCs hung out at the Wig. When the new Campus Center was opened [1960?] it had a much larger [and less exclusive] eating areas and effectively replaced the function of the old Wigwam and the Campus Center became a student hang-out and socializing place.

Heep Big Beef was a franchise that lasted only a few years. We also had a Burger Chef and Lums. Then came KFC and MacDonalds.

In the 1970's the restaurant, inside the Campus Center, was called The Wigwam, for a while. The "Pub" was also run by the Campus Center.

Billymac is correct. In the early 1980s, I worked at "The Wig" which was a dining area in the Campus Center (when it was near Taliaferro Hall and the old Bookstore on Jamestown Road). They served beer there as early as 1980 - I had a guy on my freshman hall who would go from Swem to the Wig after midnight and chug whatever beer dregs had been left in pitchers on empty tables. The Pub - formally named The Hoi Polloi - was in the back (?) of the Campus Center, was open for lunch (they accepted meal cards) and at night served beer and hosted many popular bands. The last show I recall seeing (vaguely) at the Pub was Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band. He wore an orange and white 7-11 smock, was totally wasted before the show, and passed out on the bar. Someone eventually rousted him and he put on a helluva show. Good times!

RE: That's Just the Way It Was
During the disco music years the Pub was ALIVE!
One dollar cover and twenty five cents for a paper cup of beer.
We didn't like to drag a coat to the Pub during the winter months.
We'd get all hot and sweaty after four hours of dancing and then
walk back to the dorm with temperatures close to freezing.
Fortunately, we had consumed enough of those cups to not notice
that our perspiration was starting to freeze on our skin.
And you could enjoy this at age 18 instead of 21.

Pete Kalison has a great opinion letter in the Gazette today defending our athletic program.
I'm not sure how to post it here.

For me at the Pub, the bands to see were The Nerve and The Skip Castro Band.

Liked the Good Guys. I seem to recall they played one night in the "attic" of Old Dominion. Hot as hell. When you are young, fit and trim, and serviced by "golden beverage" you make it work.

Great memories from the PUB:
1) Wednesday night was THE night for the Pub - most crowded night of the week.
2) Bill Deal and the Rhondells - at least once there.
3) The Bowman Body from Channel 8 in Richmond around Halloween, on stage, drinking and "singing" with whatever band was there. This was the Friday night before our Oyster Bowl game against Virginia Tech, 1975???
4) Steely Dan's "My Old School" was always a staple song
5) Great air hockey table in the front room

I'll try to pull out some stuff later, but here is a shelf full from my "Toy Room" (my other great passion - vintage toys).

This one shows some of the W&M sport cards, plus some old collector buttons and old tickets. (The small cartoon was a nationally run strip (Big Jake). It says "Sorta hard to ignore the big screen when your team is getting whipped by William & Mary."

[Image: wmbsh31.jpg?v=f93c1594-ab40-4fb3-a854-ca793c5af91f]

This one shows the Game Used football (signed by Jimmye and Jim Marshall - U of R), a commerative cap and a ticket stub from the 100th meeting betweem W&M - UR, back in 1990. There is also the Delta Bowl program vs. Oklahoma A&M and the hat I wore freshman year season of baseball.
